Tools:
Most of these crochet plushies patterns use similar tools. You’ll need
- yarn,
- crochet hooks,
- a stitch marker,
- toy stuffing, safety eyes,
- scissors and,
- a yarn needle / tapestry needle.
Stitches:
Most of these projects are worked in spiral rounds / continuous rounds and use only basic stitches (slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, increasing and decreasing). You’ll also need to know how to do the magic ring / magic circle (find my magic circle tutorial here). Knowing how to change yarn colors will be helpful as well.
I have tried to note the skill level needed as well as whether the project offers a video tutorial and/or photo tutorial wherever possible.
What is the Best Yarn For Making Crochet Toys?
There is some debate on this question. Some say cotton yarn, others say acrylic yarns while others will argue that plushie yarn (i.e. chenille or blanket yarn) is the best.
Ultimately, the best yarn to use is the yarn that you can afford and work with easily to create the ideal amigurumi fabric (tight and free of holes).
What if I Want to Make the Toy a Different Size?
You can easily make your crochet amigurumi toys bigger or smaller by using different yarn weights and hook sizes than what the pattern calls for.
To make the toy bigger, use a heavier weight yarn and larger hook. To make the toy smaller, use a thinner yarn and smaller crochet hook.
Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s dive into some adorable free crochet animal patterns!
