Cute and Easy Free Strawberry Bucket Hat Crochet Pattern

Crochet bucket hats are a summer weather staple and today I’m sharing my Berry Cute Strawberry Bucket Hat Crochet Pattern with you so you and your family can look cute all summer long.

This pattern is beginner-friendly and I’ve provided it in 6 different sizes 0 – 3 months through large adult.

You’ll need red, yellow and green yarn to make your strawberry bucket hat and know how to do basic crochet stitches like single crochet, half double crochet and double crochet.

Make sure to check out the note section of this pattern for detailed instructions on how to read the pattern, particularly if you’re new to reading crochet patterns.

My daughter needed a new summer hat and when she was little, she had this super cute hat that looked like a strawberry that I wanted to recreate for her.  So I decided to make her a crochet strawberry hat.  Talk about cute summer sun protection, right?!

How is This Hat Made?

This crochet strawberry bucket hat is made from the top of the hat down to the bottom brim.  It is made in a continuous spiral so there are no unsightly seams in your hat and you’ll need a stitch marker to keep track of the first stitch of the round.

After making the hat, we’ll crochet a stem and leaves which will then be added to the top of the hat.  I initially thought I wanted to add some curly green tops fo the hat but it ended up looking too busy.

After adding the leaves, we’ll embroider the “seeds” onto our hats.  Feel free to add as many or as little as you’d like.  Don’t worry about what the inside of your hat looks like because it’ll be against your head.

What Yarn Is Best For Bucket Hats?

I personally like cotton yarn for bucket hats for its washability, durability and breathability.  Cotton also helps give the hat a bit more structure over softer yarns.  When buying cotton yarn, I recommend looking for one that doesn’t split and is mercerized (if possible).

For this project, I used WeCrochet Dishie yarn.  It’s great to work with, affordable and comes in a great range of colors.  So whatever the color du jour is for summer fashion, you can pretty much find it in this yarn.  This is my favorite cotton yarn and I designed a lot of patterns using it.

How Snug Should A Crochet Bucket Hat Be?

The ideal bucket hat should be a bit loose so that there is room for your scalp to breath but fit snugly enough on your head so that it doesn’t slide around or slip off.

What Size Should I Make My Hat In?

Using a tape measure to measure around the widest point of your head.  Then check out the size chart that I’ve provided for this pattern and find your measurement under the head circumference column.

I’ve given age ranges for those sizes as an estimate but each person is different so I recommend going by the Head Circumference measurement over the age whenever possible.

Gauge:

  • 16 sts x 12 rows = 4 inches in HDC worked in the round using G / 4.0mm hook

NOTES:

  • Gauge is vital to the project to ensure it fits properly.  Not matching gauge will affect the amount of yarn needed and the size of your hat.

  • Reading the Pattern: Instructions in brackets: I.e.: (HDC, HDCINC) x 6, this means you’ll work 1 HDC stitch in the first stitch and then HDCINC in the next and you’ll repeat that pattern a total of 6 times.

    • Numbers indicated in () at the end of a Round/Row indicate the number of stitches you should have at the end of the Round/Row. I recommend counting your stitches at the end of each Round/Row before moving on to the next.

    • Where a stitch is followed by a number (i.e. SC 14), you’ll work 1 SC stitch in the next 14 stitches or chains, unless the pattern specifies to work those stitches into the same stitch or chain.

  • This pattern (except the leaves) is worked in continuous rounds (unless stated otherwise).  Do not join at the end of the round, unless indicated.  A stitch marker is used to keep track of the beginning of the round.

  • The hat is worked from the top of the hat to the bottom brim.

Adding Seeds:

Thread a length of Color C onto a tapestry needle and tie a knot in the two ends to hold the yarn double.  Embroider “seeds” onto the hat by weaving the yarn through the holes in the stitches of the hat.  Add as few or as many as you’d like.

I recommend making some of your “seeds” tilt to one side or the other to make it look less like just vertical stripes. You may need to repeat this several times, depending on the length of yarn you’re using and how many “seeds” you add.  When done, weave in ends.
