Easy Free Crochet Bat Pattern and Video Tutorial

Spooky season is almost upon us and one of my favorite things to crochet is Halloween decorations.  Today I’m sharing my Batilda free crochet bat pattern with you so that you can make your own crocheted bats.

This free crochet bat pattern includes both the written pattern and a step-by-step video tutorial, making it accessible for an advanced beginner. This mini bat is a great project if you like to sell your crochet projects as it is made in a single piece – including it’s little wings (from the top of the bat’s head to its bottom) and requires no sewing or making separate pieces.

This pattern is so much fun to make that you’ll have a whole family of bats in no time.

How Is This Bat Created?

This crochet bat pattern is worked from the top of the head to the bat’s bottom.  After we finish increasing for the head, we’ll add little bobble stitch ears on either side of the head. Then we’ll work the head and body as one piece.  The wings are created as part of the body, with the chains created in Round 7 becoming the top of the wing.

You won’t find any assembly instructions for this bat as it’s made in a single piece and we’ll only need our tapestry needles to weave in our ends and add some embroidery details to the eyes.

Tips for Personalizing Your Crochet Bat

  1. Change the Bat’s Color: While I’ve used a dark grey yarn for my bat, you can use any color to creat your little bat.  While black yarn may be the traditional choice, mix things up by using a pink yarn or purple yarn.  Pastel colors are trending for halloween right now so try a pastel orange or green yarn for a trendy look.

  2. Add Embellishments: You could use some white embroidery thread to add some fangs or pink embroidery thread to add a nose. If your bat isn’t made in black, you can use blanket embroidery thread to give it different facial expressions by adding eyebrows.  If you really want to add some extra, you could crochet a mini hat or bows for your bat as well. Let your imagination go wild.

  3. Change The Yarn: Play with different yarn textures by using fur yarns to create a furry bat or use glow-in the dark yarn (like this one from Lion Brand) to make a glow-in-the-dark friend.

  4. Change Up The Eyes: Instead of using safety eyes, you can embroider them or use googly eyes (as long as it isn’t being given to a small child).  Or even just using a different size and color of safety eyes can change up the look.

Supplies:

Abbreviations:

Special Stitches & Techniques:

  • Bobble (BOB): YO and insert hook into indicated ST. *YO and pull up a loop. YO and pull through first 2 loops on hook (2 loops remain on hook). Repeat from 4 more times (6 loops on hook). YO and pull through all 6 loops on hook.

  • Yarn Under Single Crochet: Insert hook into indicated stitch, yarn under hook and pull up a loop (2 loops on your hook), yarn over hook and pull through both loops on your hook. Find a tutorial here: https://theloopylamb.com/how-to-yarn-under-single-crochet-for-amigurumi-tutorial/

Finished Size:

  • Approx 1.75” tall when crocheted to gauge

Gauge:

  • Rounds 1 – 3” = 1” across the widest point measured front loop to front loop

NOTES:

  • Gauge is not vital to the project but it may affect the amount of yarn needed for the project and the size of your finished toy.

  • A 3.5 mm hook is recommended for this pattern but I suggest using whatever hook size needed to create a tight, closed fabric free of holes, or whatever hook size needed to match the given gauge.

    • If you find that you have holes in your fabric using the recommended hook size, try going down hook sizes until you create a tight fabric with no holes in it and no stuffing is showing through.

  • This pattern can be worked in either regular single crochet or the yarn under single crochet. My sample was done using regular single crochet. Keep in mind that if you use the yarn under single crochet, it may affect the amount of yarn used and the size of your toy.

  • This small bat is worked from the top of the body / head to the bottom.

  • Instructions within the brackets () are to be repeated the number of times specified next to the brackets.

  • Reading the Pattern: Instructions in brackets: I.e.: (SC, SCINC) x 6, this means you’ll work 1 SC stitch in the first stitch and then SCINC in the next and you’ll repeat that pattern a total of 6 times.

    • Numbers indicated in () at the end of a Round/Row indicate the number of stitches you should have at the end of the Round/Row. I recommend counting your stitches at the end of each Round/Row before moving on to the next.

    • Where SC followed by a number (i.e. SC 14), you’ll work 1 SC stitch in the next 14 stitches or chains, unless the pattern specifies to work those stitches into the same stitch or chain.

  • The pieces in this pattern are worked in continuous Rounds (unless stated otherwise).  Do not join at the end of the Round, unless indicated.  A stitch marker is used to keep track of the beginning of the Round.

  • Magic Circle Substitution: If you struggle with the MC or your yarn breaks when you try to do a MC with it, use a CH 2 and work all Round 1 stitches into the 2nd chain from the hook.

  • For a cleaner SCDEC, do your SCDEC under the front loops only of each stitch rather than under both loops (except when indicated to work your ST in a different location i.e. BLO).  hese are often referred to as invisible decreases. Find my tutorial here: https://theloopylamb.com/how-to-do-an-invisible-decrease/.

  • Place scrap pieces of yarn or stitch markers into the stitches for the safety eyes until you have crocheted past that point far enough to insert the safety eyes with the backs on them without them getting in the way of your crocheting.

FO leaving a long tail.  Thread yarn tail onto a tapestry needle and use it to thread the yarn tail through the FLO of the stitches in the last round.  Pull the yarn tail to cinch the hole closed.  Weave in ends.

Adding Whites to Eyes

  1. Using white yarn (color b) threaded onto a tapestry needle, insert the needle through the back or side of the bat and out through the stitch located closest to the center point at the top of the eye.

  2. Lay the yarn along the outside edge of the eye and insert the needle into the stitch located closest to the center point of the bottom of the eye.

  3. Bring the needle out through any stitch (ideally closer to the second eye, not catching any yarn) and pull the yarn until it lays snuggly along the outside of the eye.

  4. Insert the needle back into the same stitch you came out of (not catching any yarn) and out through the stitch located closest to the center point at the top of the second eye.

  5. Repeat steps 2 – 3 on second eye. FO and weave in yarn tails.
