I love to crochet for Halloween and I have a brand new no-sew crochet bat pattern for you today called Batilda! This post contains the written pattern as well as a step-by-step video tutorial to walk you through the project from beginning to end.
This plush yarn bat uses basic stitches and works up really quickly (I can make one in about 20-25 minutes). While I’ve used black yarn to make my bat, this toy looks great in a wide variety of colors so don’t be afraid to bust out your purple yarn or even your pink yarn to make your amigurumi bat friend.

The PDF includes instructions for making a mini bat using worsted weight yarn and instructions for using super chunky yarn weight to make a bigger bat, with photo tutorials for the tricky part of the wings as well.
How Is This No Sew Bat Project Made?
This no-sew bat plush is worked from the top of the bat (the bat’s head) to the bottom. After we make the top of the head, we’ll add ears with bobble stitches to each side of the bat’s head. The bat’s wings are crocheted as part of the bat’s body using chain stitches. These chain stitches eventually become the top of the wing. Then we crochet the remainder of the body and close our bat up. Then, using our tapestry needles, we’ll add some eye detail using some white yarn or embroidery thread.
What Kind Of Plush Yarn Is Used for This No Sew Bat Pattern?
My favorite plush yarn is Bernat Blanket yarn, which is the yarn that I’ve used to design and make this no sew bat pattern. Bernat Blanket yarn is a size 6, super bulky weight yarn. If you don’t have this yarn it can be substituted for a wide variety of plush yarns. Here are a few great options:
- Loops & Threads Chenille Home Slim
- Loops & Threads Sweet Snuggles Lite
- King Cole Warm & Toastie
- Any yarn in the Bernat Blanket line (stripes, baby, sparkle, etc)
- Ella Rae Cuddle (available at your local yarn store)
If you prefer to make this bat with acrylic yarn, check out the bottom of this post where I link to my mini free crochet bat pattern which is made with a worsted weight, acrylic yarn.

- Yarn Under Single Crochet: Insert hook into indicated stitch, yarn under hook and pull up a loop (2 loops on your hook), yarn over hook and pull through both loops on your hook. Find a tutorial here: https://theloopylamb.com/how-to-yarn-under-single-crochet-for-amigurumi-tutorial/
Finished Size:
- Approx. 5” tall when crocheted to gauge.
Gauge:
- Rounds 1 – 3 = 2.5” across the widest point measured front loop to front loop
NOTES:
- Gauge is not vital to the project but it may affect the amount of yarn needed for the project and the size of your finished toy.
- An 8.0 mm hook is recommended for this pattern but I suggest using whatever hook size needed to create a tight, closed fabric free of holes, or whatever hook size needed to match the given gauge.
- If you find that you have holes in your fabric using the recommended hook size, try going down hook sizes until you create a tight fabric with no holes in it and no stuffing is showing through.
- If you find that you have holes in your fabric using the recommended hook size, try going down hook sizes until you create a tight fabric with no holes in it and no stuffing is showing through.
- This pattern can be worked in either regular single crochet or the yarn under single crochet. My sample was done using regular single crochet. Keep in mind that if you use the yarn under single crochet, it may affect the amount of yarn used and the size of your toy.
- This bat is worked from the top of the head to the bottom.
- Instructions within the brackets () are to be repeated the number of times specified next to the brackets.
- Reading the Pattern: Instructions in brackets: I.e.: (SC, SCINC) x 6, this means you’ll work 1 SC stitch in the first stitch and then SCINC in the next and you’ll repeat that pattern a total of 6 times.
- Numbers indicated in () at the end of a Round/Row indicate the number of stitches you should have at the end of the Round/Row. I recommend counting your stitches at the end of each Round/Row before moving on to the next.
- Where SC followed by a number (i.e. SC 14), you’ll work 1 SC stitch in the next 14 stitches or chains, unless the pattern specifies to work those stitches into the same stitch or chain.
- The pieces in this pattern are worked in continuous Rounds (unless stated otherwise). Do not join at the end of the Round, unless indicated. A stitch marker is used to keep track of the beginning of the Round.
- Magic Circle Substitution: If you struggle with the MC or your yarn breaks when you try to do a MC with it, use a CH 2 and work all Round 1 stitches into the 2nd chain from the hook.
- For a cleaner SCDEC, do your SCDEC under the front loops only of each stitch rather than under both loops (except when indicated to work your ST in a different location i.e. BLO). This is often referred to as an invisible decrease. Find my tutorial here: https://theloopylamb.com/how-to-do-an-invisible-decrease/.
- Place scrap pieces of yarn or stitch markers into the stitches for the safety eyes until you have crocheted past that point far enough to insert the safety eyes with the backs on them without them getting in the way of your crocheting.

FO leaving a long tail. Thread yarn tail onto a tapestry needle and use it to thread the yarn tail through the FLO of the stitches in the last round. Pull the yarn tail to cinch the hole closed. Weave in ends.
Adding Whites to Eyes
- Using white yarn threaded onto a tapestry needle, insert the needle through the back or side of the bat and out through the stitch located closest to the center point at the top of the eye.
- Lay the yarn along the outside edge of the eye and insert the needle into the stitch located closest to the center point of the bottom of the eye.
- Bring the needle out through any stitch (ideally closer to the second eye, not catching any yarn) and pull the yarn until it lays snuggly along the outside of the eye.
- Insert the needle back into the same stitch you came out of (not catching any yarn) and out through the stitch located closest to the center point at the top of the second eye.
- Repeat steps 2 – 3 on second eye. FO and weave in yarn tails.
