Free Triceratops Crochet Pattern – Trevor Triceratops

amigurumi dinosaur sitting next to a ball of yarn with text underneath that says free triceratops crochet pattern Trevor Triceratops.

Today I’m sharing my free triceratops crochet pattern for Trevor Triceratops! Trevor is a triceratops amigurumi project that is the perfect gift for the little kid or dinosaur lover in your life. This is an easy pattern that is accessible to beginner crocheters. I’ve included a video tutorial for how to crochet the dinosaur’s leg’s since I’ve used a special stitch to create toes to avoid having to embroider them on.

In the fall, I released some cute dinosaur crochet patterns that were small enough to clip onto a backpack. Since then, my son has been hounding me to make him a crochet triceratops. I kept putting it off because I wasn’t feeling overly inspired to make one and then I found these gorgeous safety eyes in a safety eye advent calendar I got from Chateau Bornais. My son loved them too and we both agreed that they would make adorable triceratops eyes. So I set out working on my next dinosaur amigurumi pattern and I’m happy to report that my son love him.

This triceratops crochet pattern is my contribution to the 2022 Softie Crochet Along. Read more about how you can join the fun on the Underground Crafter blog. Thanks to our friends at Fairfield World for providing the Poly-fil stuffing for this project.

The Trevor Triceratops free triceratops crochet pattern is a fun project made with basic stitches. I’ve added a modified popcorn stitch to create the toes and little bumps in the frill. Popcorn stitches are super simple to do but if you haven’t done them before, be sure to check out my video tutorial for Round 6 of the legs to see me demonstrate it.

How Do you Crochet a Triceratops?

The crochet dinosaur made with this free crochet pattern is made in multiple pieces and sewn together. We’ll make the head, tail, horns, frill, body and legs separately and then use the yarn tail from each piece to sew the body parts of our little guy together.

I’ve used a worsted weight yarn for this crochet dinosaur but you can use whatever yarn weight you would like to make your plush toy, as long as you maintain a consistent tension throughout your project. If you’d like to make a giant dinosaur ( I know giant ami is very trendy right now), try using a bulky or super bulky weight yarn in place of the worsted weight yarn.

How Can I Make My Triceratops Bigger?

Since gauge is not vital to this project, the quickest way to make this (and many other amigurumi patterns) bigger is to use a thicker yarn and a larger crochet hook. It may take some experimentation with different hook and yarn combos but as long as you maintain a consistent tension through out your project and you don’t have holes large enough for stuffing to show through, you’re good to go.

Supplies:

Abbreviations:

Special Stitches & Techniques:

  • Popcorn (PC): DC 4 times in the designated ST.  Remove working loop from hook and insert hook from front to back through the first DC ST.  Insert hook through working loop and pull loop through ST. YO and pull through loop to close.

  • Invisible Finish/Join: FO leaving a long tail. Thread the tail onto a tapestry needle.  Place the tapestry needle through the top of the 2nd ST from front to back and pull through.  Place tip of needle into top of the last ST of the round, under the back loop of the stitch, and pull through to the back of the work.  Weave in the end. Need more help? Check out my Invisible Finish Tutorial.

Finished Size:

  • Approx. 15” tall from base of feet to top of frill

Gauge:

  • Rounds 1 – 4 of Head = 1.5” across at widest point

NOTES:

  • Instructions within the brackets () are to be repeated the number of times specified next to the brackets.

  • This pattern is worked in continuous rounds (unless stated otherwise).  Do not join at the end of the Round, unless indicated.  A stitch marker is used to keep track of the beginning of the round.

  • For a cleaner SCDEC, do your SCDEC under the front loops only of each stitch rather than under both loops.  This is often referred to as an invisible decrease. Need more help? Check out my invisible decrease tutorial.

  • Gauge is not vital to the project but it may affect the amount of yarn needed for the project and the size of your toy.

  • To do the PC stitches in Round 4 of the legs, change colours on the last YO of the last DC and complete PC as normal.

  • To avoid a floppy head, stuff the neck of the toy firmly as you are sewing the head to the body.  Also, sewing around the posts of the stitches in the last round instead of through the tops of the stitches will help it be more secure.
