How do you crochet an amigurumi bird?
The head and body of this pattern is made in a single piece, then the wings, beak, tail and feet are made separately and sewn onto the project. The pieces are small and quick to sew on. The head/body is worked from the top-down and there is a single colour-change that is simple to execute. Other than that, all the other pieces are made in a single-colour, making them quick and simple to make.
How big is the bird made from this amigurumi bird crochet pattern?
When crocheted to gauge, Bubba Bird is approximately 3.25″ tall. He is small enough to fit in your hands and is perfectly sized for younger children to play with. My Bubba Bird has been enjoying hours of playtime with my daughter. He is small enough to be easily transported so Bubba gets lots of travel time while running errands.

Ways to Customize Your Bubba Bird
- The easiest/quickest way to customize your Bubba Bird is to change up the colours you use.
- Try using shades of brown (like Brindle & Sienna Brava Worsted Weight Yarn) to create a chubby sparrow.
- Try using black or dark grey to start and orange for the body to make a bird that is similar to an oriole.
- Try using black or dark grey to start and pink for the body to make a bird that is similar to a pink jay.
- Try two different shades of blue or blue and grey to make a pigeon.
- Try using shades of brown (like Brindle & Sienna Brava Worsted Weight Yarn) to create a chubby sparrow.
- Make it bigger/smaller: Using a different hook and yarn combination can easily change the size of your bird. WeCrochet’s amazing Brava line also comes in Sport and Bulky Weights as well. Check out Brava Sport Weight and Brava Bulky Weight here.

- For a cleaner SCDEC, do your SCDEC under the front loops only of each stitch rather than under both loops. This is often referred to as an invisible decrease. Need more help? Check out my invisible decrease tutorial.
- Gauge is not vital to the project but it may affect the amount of yarn needed for the project and the size of your toy.

This is a really cute bird crochet pattern! I’m going to have to try it out!
Thank you :-). I hope you have fun making it
He’ ADORABLE! Thank you for sharing xx
thank you and you’re welcome 🙂
Thank You for showing the tutorial on invisible joining the row. I have a question you cut your yarn to use your technic but what if you wanted to do more rows of that same color? Do I cut a longer piece guessing how much yarn I will need for extra rows?
You’re welcome 🙂 Depending on where I wanted to use the colour again, I would do 1 of the following things:
1. if it’s further away and I’m not confident in carrying/floating my yarn behind my work, I’d just cut it and reattach later.
2. I could carry the yarn behind my stitches if I have decent tension and know that it won’t show through.
3. You could just drop the yarn instead of cutting it and then picking it back up and using it again when you need it. because it’s on the inside of the project, it doesn’t need to look pretty. However, you’d have to make sure that you don’t pull it too tight which could pull/warp your fabric and it works best if you’re picking it up on the same side of the project.
I hope this helps!
