Crochet Owl Ornament Free Pattern

I love, love, love owls. As we prepared to put up our Christmas tree this year, I decided that it needed another owl on it. So, I made one up and now I have this adorable crochet owl ornament free pattern to share with you all.

He is just way to cute and since he’s soft, there’s no risk of him breaking should little hands find their way to the tree. I couldn’t decide on a fun name for this crochet owl ornament free pattern so I just decided to call him Baby Owl Ornament.

If you haven’t used faux yarn to crochet amigurumi before, this crochet owl ornament free pattern is a great pattern to finally give it a try. The owl is small and quick to make so it’s not a huge committment in terms of time or resources.

Faux fur yarn is incredibly forgiving so if you don’t have the tidiest seaming when putting your crochet owl ornament together, no one can tell. The fur hides it all and still looks great. Check out my tips and tricks for using faux fur yarns in the video below so you can hit the ground running.

If you’re looking to give faux fur yarns a try, I recommend using Fable Fur from WeCrochet. It’s my favourite faux fur yarn as it has a thick strap on the back of the yarn which helps you feel the stitches, even if you can’t see them.

Finished Size: 

• Approximately 3.5” tall

Gauge: 

• 4 sts x 5.5 rows = 2”

Notes:

• Gauge is not vital to the project but it may affect the amount of yarn needed for the project and the size of your finished toy. 
  
  
• Maintain a consistent tension throughout the project to ensure the pieces fit together as expected. 
  
  
• A 5.5mm crochet hook is recommended for the furry parts of this project but if you find you are unable to feel your stitches, you can adjust your hook until you can more easily feel your stitches to know where to place your stitches.  This may however affect your gauge and therefore, the amount of yarn needed. 
  
  
• This pattern is worked in continuous rounds (unless stated otherwise).  Do not join at the end of the row, unless indicated.  A stitch marker is used to keep track of the beginning of the round.

• Instructions within the brackets () are to be repeated the number of times specified next to the brackets.
  
  
• Reading the Pattern: Instructions in brackets: I.e.: (SC, SCINC) x 6, this means you’ll work 1 SC stitch in the first stitch and then SCINC in the next and you’ll repeat that pattern a total of 6 times.
  
  
  • Numbers indicated in () at the end of a Round/Row indicate the number of stitches you should have at the end of the Round/Row. I recommend counting your stitches at the end of each Round/Row before moving on to the next.
  
  
  
  • Where SC followed by a number (i.e. SC 14), you’ll work 1 SC stitch in the next 14 stitches or chains, unless the pattern specifies to work those stitches into the same stitch or chain.
    
    
• Magic Circle Substitution: If you struggle with the MC or your yarn breaks when you try to do a MC with it, use a CH 2 and work all Round 1 stitches into the 2^nd chain from the hook.
  
  
• Use a regular single crochet decrease rather than an invisible decrease. You won’t see it with the fur anyway.
  
  
• Place scrap pieces of yarn or stitch markers into the stitches indicated for safety eye placement until you have crocheted past that point far enough to insert the safety eyes with the back on them without them getting in the way of your crocheting.
  
  
• I recommend using sewing pins to help get the ideal placement of your pieces and to hold the pieces in place while you sew.

Crochet Owl Ornament Free Pattern

Head

Round 1: Using Fable Fur and 5.5mm hook, make a MC and SC 6 into the MC. (6)


Round 2: (SCINC) x 6. (12)


Round 3: (SC, SCINC) x 6. (18)


Rounds 4 – 8: SC around. (18) – Place safety eyes in Row 4 with 2 sts between them
Start adding stuffing, adding a bit more as you work.


Round 9: (SC 1, SCDEC) x 6. (12)


Round 10: (SCDEC) x 6. (6)


FO leaving a long tail to sew up the hole.  Add a bit more stuffing and sew up the hole.  Weave in ends.

Wings (Make 2)

Round 1: Using Fable Fur and 5.5mm hook, make a MC and SC 6 into the MC. (6)
Pull the circle tight but do not join.

FO, leaving a long tail and sew onto either side of the bird, lining the wings up with the eyes.

Beak:

Round 1: Using Brava Worsted in Cobblestone Heather and a 3.5mm hook, make a MC.  CH 3 and DC 3 into the MC. (3)

Turn and join last ST to the top of the CH 3 with a SL ST.  FO leaving a long tail to sew onto the face. Using the tail from the creation of the MC, sew the CH 3 to the last DC to close up the back of the beak.  Sew onto face between the eyes and weave in ends.

Feet

Row 1: Using 3.5mm hook and Brava Worsted yarn in Cobblestone Heather, CH 3. In 2^nd CH from hook, SC.  SC in next ST. Turn. (2)


Row 2: CH 1. SC in each ST. Turn. (2)


Row 3:  CH 1. SCINC in each ST. Turn. (4)


Row 4: CH 4. SL ST in the 2^nd CH from the hook.  SL ST 2. SL ST in the next SC of Row 3.  CH 4. SL ST in the 2^nd CH from the hook.  SL ST 2. SL ST in the next SC of Row 3. CH 4, SL ST in the 2^nd CH from the hook.  SL ST 2. SL ST in the last SC of Row 3.  SL ST down the side of the foot, placing a SL ST in the end of each row. 


FO leaving a long tail to sew onto body.  Sew feet onto the bottom of the body so the toes just peek out the front.

Creating the Hanger

Thread the ribbon or piece of yarn onto a tapestry needle.  Insert tapestry needle through one of the stitches near the top/center point of the head and out through the stitch directly opposite the stitch you went into.  Tie the ends together in an overhand knot and slide the knot inside the head.
