Free Crochet Chicken Pattern – Sir Clucksalot the Amigurumi Chicken

Spring is upon us and today I wanted to share my free crochet chicken pattern to make Sir Clucksalot. Sir Clucksalot is a quick and easy project that is great for gifting to kids and chicken lovers alike.

Could you imagine an easter basket filled with these? How adorable would that be?!

A Chicken for a Pet?

I was inspired to make a free crochet chicken pattern because my daughter, who for some unknown reason, really wants a chicken. She is four and doesn’t understand that you can’t have a chicken as a pet.

For a period she’d wake up, and the first words out of her mouth everyday were “can we get me a chicken today” with the occasional variation of that being “can I hold a chicken today?”.

Living in the city and being on lockdown aren’t conducive for coordinating a trip to a local petting farm so I decided to get creative.

Although Sir Clucksalot isn’t alive, she’s pretty happy with him and that I don’t say no when she wants to take a chicken with her to bed. I call that a win-win.

Crocheting Amigurumi with Fur Yarn

For this pattern, I’ve used Fable Fur yarn from We Crochet. If this is your first time using faux fur yarn, I highly recommend that you check out my Tips and Tricks for Working with Faux Fur Yarn or the video below.

This will help you to hit the ground running and avoid frustration working with this yarn. This pattern is a great place to start working with faux fur yarns because it’s small and doesn’t involve a lot of shaping.

Worsted weight yarn is used to create the feet, beak and frills for Sir Clucksalot that are made as separate pieces and sewn onto the body.

Do I have to use fur yarn to make this amigurumi chicken?

For those of you that may not want to use faux fur yarn to make this free crochet chicken pattern, you’re in luck! I designed Chick Jagger to recreate this pattern with an acrylic yarn and it’s available as a free crochet pattern here on the blog.

Abbreviations:

• CH = Chain
  
  
• FO = Finish Off
  
  
• MC = Magic Circle / Magic Ring

Finished Size: 

• Approximately 3.5” tall. (not including frills)

Gauge: 

• 4 sts x 5.5 rows = 2” in Fable Fur – Not vital to project as long as the same tension is maintained throughout the project and there are no holes that stuffing can be seen through. 

Notes:

• Gauge is not vital to the project but it may affect the amount of yarn needed for the project. 
  
  
• A 5.5 mm hook is recommended for the project but if you find you are unable to feel your stitches, you can adjust your hook until you can more easily feel your stitches to know where to place your stitches.  This may however affect your gauge and therefore, the amount of yarn needed. 
  
  
• This pattern is worked in continuous rounds / a continuous spiral (unless stated otherwise).  Do not join at the end of the row, unless indicated.  A stitch marker is used to keep track of the beginning of the round.
  
  
• All pieces made in the Fable Fur are worked and sewn onto the project with the wrong side facing out to show the better-looking side of the fur.

Free Crochet Chicken Pattern – Sir Clucksalot:

Head/Body

Round 1: Using Fable Fur and 5.5mm hook, make a MC and SC 6 into the MC. (6)

Round 2: (SCINC) x 6 (12)

Round 3: (SC, SCINC) x 6 (18)

Rounds 4 – 8: SC around (18) – Place safety eyes in Row 4 with 2 sts between them.
Start adding stuffing, adding a bit more as you work.

Round 9: (SC 1, SCDEC) x 6 (12)

Round 10: (SCDEC) x 6 (6)

FO leaving a long tail to sew up the hole.  Add a bit more stuffing and sew up the hole.  Weave in ends.

Wings (Make Two)

Round 1: Using Fable Fur and 5.5mm hook, make a MC and SC 6 into the MC. (6)
Pull the circle tight but do not join.

FO, leaving a long tail and sew onto either side of the bird, lining the wings up with the eyes.

Beak:

Round 1: Using Brava Worsted in Canary and a 3.5mm hook, make a MC.  SC 4 into the MC. (4)

Round 2: (SCINC) x 4 (8)

Rounds 3 – 4: SC around (8)

Join last ST to first ST with SL ST.  FO leaving a long tail.  Do NOT stuff.  Flatten the piece and sew onto the face.

Feet (Make Two)

Row 1: Using 3.5mm hook and Brava Worsted yarn in Canary, CH 3. In 2nd CH from hook, SC.  SC in next ST. Turn. (2)

Row 2: CH 1. SC in each ST. Turn. (2)

Row 3:  CH 1. SCINC in each ST. Turn. (4)

Row 4: CH 4. SL ST in the 2^nd CH from the hook.  SL ST 2. SL ST in the next SC of Row 3.  CH 5. SL ST in the 2^nd CH from the hook.  SL ST 2. SL ST in the next SC of Row 3. CH 4, SL ST in the 2^nd CH from the hook.  SL ST 3. SL ST in the last SC of Row 3.  SL ST down the side of the foot, placing a SL ST in the end of each row. 

FO leaving a long yarn tail to sew onto body.  Sew feet onto the bottom of the body so the toes just peek out the front.

Frill 1:

Round 1: Using Brava Worsted in Red and a 3.5mm hook, make a MC and SC 6 into the SC (6)

Round 2: SC around (6)

Round 3: (SCINC) x 6 (12)

Round 4: SC around (12)

Round 5: (SCDEC) x 6 (6)

Round 6: SC around (6)

FO leaving a long tail to sew onto the head.  Flatten piece, do NOT stuff.

Frill Assembly:

Sew the frills on to the top of the head in a line placing Frill 1 closest to the face with Frill 2 and Frill 3 following behind Frill 1, in that order.
