About Claudio the Crab
Claudio loves sunny beach days, collecting seashells, and making new friends. This little crab may be small, but he’s packed with personality and makes an adorable addition to any ocean-themed amigurumi collection or adding summer vibes to your bag.
While I was creating Claudio, I had a brief moment of panic when I worried that I had given him too many legs. That led me to learn a very interesting fact about crabs!
Did you know that true crabs have four pairs of walking legs and one pair of claws, while false crabs have three visible pairs of walking legs and one pair of claws? They still have a fourth pair of legs, but they’re so small that they don’t help the crab walk.
Pretty cool, right? I learned about this fascinating crab fact from the Marine Conservation Society.

- Super Bulky Weight: Rounds 1 – 4 = 3.5 in/8.9cmmeasured across the widest point
Notes:
- Both sizes of this toy follow the same pattern instructions, only the material lists differ.
- This pattern is worked from the top of the crab to the bottom. We’ll create the body of the crab followed by the legs, right claw, left claw, second set of legs and then the bottom part of the body.
- Gauge is not vital to the project but it may affect the amount of yarn needed for the project and the size of your finished toy.
- A 3.5mm hook is recommended for this pattern, but I suggest using whatever hook size is needed to create a tight, closed fabric free of holes, or whatever hook size needed to match the given gauge.
- If you find that you have holes in your fabric using the recommended hook size, try going down a hook size until you create a tight fabric with no holes in it and no stuffing is showing through.
- If you find that you have holes in your fabric using the recommended hook size, try going down a hook size until you create a tight fabric with no holes in it and no stuffing is showing through.
- This pattern can be worked in either regular single crochet or the yarn under single crochet. My sample was done using regular single crochet. Keep in mind that if you use the yarn under single crochet, it may affect the amount of yarn used and the size of your toy.
- Reading the Pattern: Instructions in brackets: I.e.: [SC, SCINC] x 6 means you’ll work 1 SC stitch in the first stitch and then SCINC in the next and you’ll repeat that pattern a total of 6 times.
- Numbers indicated in parentheses () at the end of a Round indicate the number of stitches you should have at the end of the Round. I recommend counting your stitches at the end of each Round/Row before moving on to the next.
- Where SC followed by a number (i.e. SC 14), you’ll work 1 SC stitch in the next 14 stitches or chains, unless the pattern specifies to work those stitches into the same stitch or chain.
- This pattern is worked in continuous spirals / Rounds (unless stated otherwise). Do not join at the end of the Round, unless indicated. A stitch marker is used to keep track of the beginning of the Round.
- Magic Circle Substitution: If you struggle with the MC or your yarn breaks when you try to do a MC with it, use a CH 2 and work all Round 1 stitches into the 2nd chain from the hook.
- For a cleaner SCDEC, do your SCDEC under the front loops only of each stitch rather than under both loops (except when indicated to work your ST in a different location i.e. BLO). This is often referred to as an invisible decrease. Find my tutorial here: https://theloopylamb.com/how-to-do-an-invisible-decrease/
- Place scrap pieces of yarn or stitch markers into the stitches indicated for safety eye placement until you have crocheted past that point far enough to insert the safety eyes with the back on them without them getting in the way of your crocheting.

FO leaving a long yarn tail. Place tapestry needle onto the yarn tail and weave through the FLO of each ST of the last round and pull tight to close the hole. (This technique is called the ultimate finish. Find a tutorial on how to do that here: https://theloopylamb.com/how-to-finish-off-amigurumi-using-the-ultimate-finish/ )
Weave in ends. If creating a bag charm or keychain, add the hardware to the back of the crab (or your desired location).
Tip: If your legs and/or claws are curling, try pinning them straight on a blocking mat and gently steam blocking them. Be careful not to overheat the piece or let the steamer touch your crochet directly.
FAQs
Yes. This no sew crochet crab pattern uses basic stitches including single crochet, increases, decreases, chains, and half double crochet stitches. Confident beginners should be able to complete this project successfully with the use of the provided video tutorial.
This pattern works well with both worsted weight yarn and super bulky yarn. Different yarn weights and hook sizes will affect the finished size of your crab. You’ll only need a small bit of yarn to make your own tiny crab.
Absolutely! The mini version works well as a crochet keychain, bag charm, backpack accessory, or small gift.
That depends on how quickly you crochet. I can make one in about 30 minutes while watching t.v.
