Can I use worsted weight yarn instead to make this cute candy corn plushie?
Absolutely! If you want to use a medium weight yarn (4) for this project, just be sure to use a smaller crochet hook and swap in white and black embroidery thread for the worsted weight yarn used in the embroidery instructions of this pattern. Keep in mind that a toy made in worsted weight yarn will be much smaller than the given size.
Do I Have To Use Safety Eyes?
No! While safety eyes give a professional polish to your toy, you don’t have to use them, especially as they aren’t safe to be given to very young children. To make crochet safety eyes, I recommend using black blanket yarn or worsted weight yarn (whichever you prefer) and following my How to Crochet a Flat Circle tutorial to make a flat circle in your desired size. Then sew them onto your finished project.

How Can I Make This Crochet Candy Corn Toy in Other Sizes?
While this free crochet candy corn pattern is for the mini size of the Candy Corn Cutie Crew, I’ve also designed four additional sizes – all using the same yarn – so you can make a whole family of candy corn plushies!

Special Stitches & Techniques:
- Invisible Finish/Join: Fasten off (FO), leaving a long yarn tail. Thread the yarn tail onto a tapestry needle. Skip a stitch and insert the tapestry needle through the top of the 2nd ST of the round from front to back (under both loops) and pull through. Place the tip of the needle into the top of the last ST of the round, under the back loop of the stitch, and pull through to the back of the work. Weave in the end. Find a tutorial here: https://theloopylamb.com/invisible-finish-crochet-tutorial/
- Standing SC / SC Join: With a slip knot already on your hook, insert the hook into the designated stitch. Yarn over (YO) and pull up a loop. YO and pull through both loops on the hook. Counts as a stitch. Find a tutorial here: https://theloopylamb.com/how-to-do-the-single-crochet-join-for-cleaner-yarn-joins/
- Yarn Under Single Crochet: Insert your hook into the indicated stitch, yarn under hook and pull up a loop (2 loops on your hook), yarn over hook and pull through both loops on your hook. Find a tutorial here: https://theloopylamb.com/how-to-yarn-under-single-crochet-for-amigurumi-tutorial/
Finished Sizes:
- This toy measures approx. 3.75″ tall
- This toy is available in 4 other sizes that range from 4.75″ tall to 8″ tall. Find them in the ad-free printable version of this pattern available in my Ravelry and Etsy shops.
NOTES:
- Gauge is not vital to the project, but it may affect the amount of yarn needed for the project and the size of your finished toy.
- An 8.0mm crochet hook is recommended for this pattern, but I recommend using whatever hook size is needed to create a tight, closed fabric free of holes, or whatever hook size is needed to match the given gauge.
- If you find that you have holes in your fabric using the recommended hook size, try going down a hook size until you create a tight fabric with no holes in it and no stuffing is showing through.
- If you find that you have holes in your fabric using the recommended hook size, try going down a hook size until you create a tight fabric with no holes in it and no stuffing is showing through.
- This pattern can be worked in either regular single crochet or the yarn under single crochet (See Special Stitches & Techniques). My sample was done using yarn under single crochet. Keep in mind that if you use the yarn over single crochet, it may affect the amount of yarn used and the size of your toy.
- Reading the Pattern: Instructions in brackets: I.e. (SC, SCINC) x 6, means you’ll work 1 SC stitch in the first stitch (ST) and then SCINC in the next ST and you’ll repeat that pattern a total of 6 times.
- Numbers indicated in () at the end of a Round/Row indicate the number of stitches you should have at the end of the Round/Row. I recommend counting your stitches at the end of each Round/Row before moving on to the next.
- Where SC is followed by a number (i.e. SC 14), you’ll work 1 SC stitch in the next 14 stitches or chains, unless the pattern specifies to work those stitches into the same stitch or chain.
- Numbers indicated in () at the end of a Round/Row indicate the number of stitches you should have at the end of the Round/Row. I recommend counting your stitches at the end of each Round/Row before moving on to the next.
- This pattern is worked in continuous Rounds (unless stated otherwise) from the top of the toy to the bottom. Do not join at the end of the Round, except where indicated. A stitch marker is used to keep track of the beginning of the Round.
- Magic Circle Substitution: If you struggle with the MC or your yarn breaks when you try to do a MC with it, use a CH 2 and work all Round 1 stitches into the 2nd CH from the hook.
- For a cleaner SCDEC, do your SCDEC under the front loops only (FLO) of each stitch rather than under both loops (except when indicated to work your ST in a different location i.e. BLO). This is often referred to as an invisible decrease. In Rounds where you are decreasing but expected to work in the back loop only (BLO), work your decrease in the same manner but using the back loops only. Find my tutorial here: https://theloopylamb.com/how-to-do-an-invisible-decrease/
- The invisible join technique is used to minimize the look of the color changes in this piece. If you would prefer not to cut your yarn, you can change colors at the end of the previous round instead. In this case, replace the Standing SC with a regular or yarn under single crochet stitch. Just keep in mind that this method will make the colour changes more noticeable.
- Where a Standing SC is used, it creates a cleaner yarn join. If you prefer, you can attach your yarn in the indicated stitch with a slip stitch (SL ST), chain 1, and then single crochet in the same stitch. Just note that this method may result in a bulkier, less clean-looking join.
- I recommend tying the two yarn ends from your color change together in a knot on the inside of the toy to secure them after you switch colors.
- Place scrap yarn or stitch markers in the stitches marked for safety eye placement. Continue crocheting until you’re far enough past that point to insert the safety eyes with the backs on, without them getting in the way of your stitches.

Embroidery
Adding the face is where your Candy Corn Cutie really comes to life! I’ve included a step-by-step photo tutorial below to help walk you through how I embroidered the mouth and added embroidery detail to the eyes on my sample.
This method is beginner-friendly, doesn’t require any fancy tools, and works beautifully for all sizes of the Candy Corn Cutie Crew. Feel free to adjust the placement of the mouth to give your amigurumi its own personality.
If you’re more of a visual learner, you’ll also find a full video tutorial embedded above in this post!
Embroidery: Adding Whites to Eyes
Note: Images below for Steps 1 – 4 are from another of my toy designs, but the steps and concept are identical.

- Thread your tapestry needle with white worsted weight yarn held double. Insert the needle through the back or side of the toy and out through the stitch located closest to the center-point at the top of the eye.

2. Lay yarn along the outside edge of the eye and insert the needle into the stitch located closest to the center point of the bottom of the eye.

3. Bring the needle out through any stitch (ideally closer to the second eye, not catching any yarn) and pull the yarn until it lies snuggly along the outside of the eye.

4. Insert the needle back into the same stitch you came out of (not catching any yarn) and out through the stitch located closest to the center-point at the top of the second eye.
5. Repeat with Steps 2 – 3 on the second eye. FO. Weave in/secure the ends.
Tip: For larger sizes and/or sinker-style safety eyes, you may want to add a small stitch to the center point of your yarn at the side of the eye to hold it in place. See Tip Images 1 & 2 below.

Embroidery: Adding a Smile

- Thread your tapestry needle with black worsted weight yarn held double. Insert needle through back or side of toy and out through the front of the toy where you’d like the top of one side of your mouth to start.

Insert the needle into the stitch where you’d like the other side of your mouth to be and out through the center point of where the mouth will be.

3.Make sure that the yarn that stretches between those two points is under where your needle comes out of the toy. Gently pull the yarn so the center point of the smile touches the yarn attached to the needle

4. Insert your needle back into the same stitch you just came out of, passing over the center point of that yarn to form a triangle. Bring the needle out of the toy at any point, gently pulling the yarn so your stitch sits flat and is barely visible. Don’t pull so hard that the fabric dimples – you want it to lay flat on the surface of the fabric. FO and weave in ends.

Completed amigurumi smile embroidery.
