Can I Use Acrylic Yarn for a Crochet Cup Cozy?
I made my Cedar Lane Mosaic Crochet Cup Cozy using acrylic yarn because it’s affordable, widely available, and comes in a huge variety of colors. Since the cozy wraps around the outside of your cup and does not come into direct contact with high heat, acrylic yarn works well for this project.
If you prefer natural fibers, cotton yarn is also a great option. Cotton is durable, washable, and commonly used for mug cozies and kitchen projects. Choose the yarn you enjoy working with and that best suits how you plan to use your cup cozy.

- Bernat Super Value (100% Acrylic yarn, Worsted Weight (4), 440 yd/402 m, 197 g/6.95 oz), in the following colors and amounts:

- Color B: White – 1 skein (approx. 43 yd/19g)

Special Stitches & Techniques:
- Drop Down Double Crochet (DDC): Work a double crochet into the front loop of the stitch two rounds below in the same color, skipping the stitch directly behind on the current round.
- Invisible Finish/Join: FO leaving a long tail. Thread the tail onto a tapestry needle. Place the tapestry needle through the top of the 2nd ST from front to back and pull through. Place tip of needle into top of the last ST of the round, under the back loop of the stitch, and pull through to the back of the work. Weave in the end. - Reverse Slip Stitch Color Change: Remove loop in current color from your hook and insert hook from the back of the fabric through to the front of the fabric through the first stitch of the Round. Place the loop of the current color back on the hook and pull it through the stitch to the back of the fabric. Yarn over (YO) with the new color and pull through the loop on your hook. YO and chain 1 to secure.
Finished Size:
- Approx 4.25in wide x 3.75in tall when laid flat. – Fits most standard to-go cups. Samples are shown on cups that have a 10″ circumference at the widest point.
Gauge:
- Approx. 8 sts x 8 rounds = 2”
Notes:
- Gauge is vital to this project to ensure the cup cozy fits as expected. If you don’t plan on matching gauge, check out the note regarding resizing this project which will also enable you to use other yarn weights.
- When measuring your gauge, measure it from the back of your swatch to get the most accurate measurement. If you’re unsure if your gauge measurement is correct, check out my Gauge Calculator Tool.
- A 4.5 mm hook is the recommended hook size for this project however, use the hook size needed to meet gauge, based on your personal tension and yarn choice.
- In Overlay Mosaic Crochet, you work one round of color at a time. This means that you will be changing colors at the end of every round. Color changes are made using the Reverse Slip Stitch Color Change (See Special Stitches & Techniques). To avoid weaving in ends, after completing the color change leave the old color attached (dropping it and leaving it out of work) and pick it back up when needed next, carrying the yarn up the inside seam of the cup cozy. Alternatively, you can cut each color when finished with it and weave in the ends.
- How to Read the Written Pattern Instructions: The number indicated next to the instructions (i.e., DDC 7) means you’ll work a Drop Down Double Crochet stitch in the next 7 stitches. Where no number is indicated (i.e., DDC) you will do that stitch only once.
- Numbers contained in the parentheses () at the end of each round indicate the number of stitches you should have after successfully completing each round. Rounds without a number indicated in parentheses indicate that the stitch count continues unchanged from the previous round.

- This mosaic crochet cup cozy is worked in joined rounds (unless stated otherwise). Do not turn at the end of the round unless indicated. Placing a stitch marker in the first and/or last stitch of the round can help prevent losing stitches or picking up extra stitches.
- How to Adjust the Size: To adjust the size of this project, change the length of the foundation chain. Create a foundation chain in multiples of 3 until it fits comfortably around your cup.

With Color A, CH 33. Taking care not to twist the chain, join the last chain to the first chain with a SL ST.

Beginning with Round 3, you may choose to follow either the written instructions or the chart. Rounds 3–14 end with an RSSCC to change colors.
