If you’ve been eyeing Minecraft: The Official Crochet Book and wondering whether it’s worth adding to your crochet library, you’re in the right place. Minecraft has grown far beyond a simple video game and become a global phenomenon, inspiring everything from toys and clothing to a recent Minecraft movie featuring Jack Black. With so many Minecraft fans eager to bring the blocky world into the real world, it was only a matter of time before an official crochet book arrived.
In this review, I’ll take a closer look at the patterns, skill level, supplies, and maker support included in the book so you can decide whether it’s a good fit for your crochet library. I’m also giving away a copy of this book to one lucky winner. Keep reading to learn how you can enter to win.

What are the Patterns Like?
One thing I appreciated is that every pattern includes the exact yarn line and color names used in the sample projects. When you’re recreating recognizable items from the world of Minecraft, color accuracy matters, and this makes it much easier to achieve the same look shown in the book. Several patterns also include alternate color variations. For example, the Sleeping Fox Pillow can be modified into an Arctic Fox Pillow, giving makers additional value from a single pattern.
I found the patterns clear and easy to follow, particularly as someone familiar with all of the techniques used. That being said, however, those unfamiliar with the techniques may find projects like those that use C2C difficult, as there are no starting block instructions.
You’re provided a chart that starts on Row 1 with instructions that say “Row 1: (A) x 1 (1 square)”. If you don’t know how to get that started, you may be frustrated and end up having to look online for assistance (I have a resource here to help: YouTube).
To be fair, in the Special Stitches section, you can get started using the “Increase Square” instructions, but you have to know that it’s called that and go looking for it. A little more guidance around instances in the book would make it a bit more accessible to those unfamiliar with these techniques.
Patterns that use colorwork include charts. However, there are no support photos throughout the book beyond charts and assembly diagrams. Some additional step-by-step photos would have been helpful for visual learners and those hoping for a bit more support in the assembly processes for some of the toys.
Minecraft: The Official Crochet Book Flip-Through
Crochet Terminology
The book uses US crochet terminology. Interestingly, the book doesn’t specifically state this anywhere that I could find, nor does it provide any US-to-UK conversion information. Experienced crocheters will likely recognize the terminology immediately, but newer makers from outside North America may need to determine this on their own.

Skill Level
Projects are assigned skill levels using a pickaxe rating system:
- 1 Pickaxe = Basic
- 2 Pickaxes = Easy
- 3 Pickaxes = Intermediate
- 4 Pickaxes = Complex
The book does not provide additional explanations for what each skill level means, but the project breakdown is as follows:
- 7 Basic patterns
- 8 Easy patterns
- 11 Intermediate patterns
- 3 Complex patterns
I appreciated that skill ratings are provided for every project, though more detailed descriptions of the expectations for each level would have been helpful for first-time makers trying to choose a project.
Supports Included for Makers
This is probably the area where I felt the book was weakest. Multiple crochet techniques are used throughout the book, including tapestry crochet, Tunisian crochet, and corner-to-corner crochet. However, there are no photo tutorials or instructional resources included to teach those techniques. The resources you expect to find at the beginning or end of a crochet book with stitch and technique guides are not included.
As a result, crocheters will need to either already know these skills or be willing to seek out additional resources elsewhere. While experienced crocheters likely won’t have an issue, beginners may find some projects frustrating if they’re attempting these techniques for the first time.

Overall
This is a fun and creative crochet book that will likely be a big hit with Minecraft fans of all ages.
I’ve had this book sitting on my desk for several days while working on this review, and both of my kids have been flipping through it regularly. My daughter asks almost daily when I’m going to make them some of the projects, and my son has already informed me that he “needs” a Diamond Sword. Thanks, Lee.
I would recommend this title to intermediate and advanced crocheters who already have experience with techniques such as tapestry crochet, Tunisian crochet, and corner-to-corner crochet. Adventurous beginners may still find success with some of the easier projects with a healthy dose of patience and tenacity – all needed to do well in Minecraft anyways.
If you’re looking for a crochet book filled with recognizable main characters from the Minecraft universe, Minecraft: The Official Crochet Book is a solid addition to your crochet library and a perfect companion for anyone who loves the world of Minecraft.
