What Yarn Is Used In This Pattern?

I used  Bernat Maker yarn, which is a bulky (5) yarn that has a tube-like structure.  It is a really cool yarn that provides great insulation and durability.  I have one that I keep in my purse and use almost daily and it still looks fantastic.

While I chose to use a solid color for my crochet cup cozy, feel free to play with color by using variegated yarns or even adding stripes.

Can I Use Acrylic Yarn for My Crochet Coffee Sleeve?

Absolutely! This is a great project for using up scrap yarn so if you have acrylic yarn that you want to use crochet on.

Some folks may worry that the acrylic yarn (being made of plastic) may melt at higher temperatures.  While that is possible with acrylic yarn, in my experience, I haven’t had a coffee hot enough to affect my cozy sleeve (and most of mine are made from acrylic and are used daily).

Can I Use Worsted Weight Yarn (4) For This Project?

Absolutely! Check out the pattern notes section of this pattern to find the information needed to resize this crochet cup cozy pattern to fit a smaller or larger cup.

This simple pattern is really easy to adjust and is a good way to practice adjusting a project size without having to commit to a huge project.  Just remember that if you do choose to change the size of yarn that you use, change your crochet hook size to one that works best with your yarn.

Notes:

  • Gauge is vital for ensuring the cup cozy fits as expected however, you will still have a completed coffee cup cozy if you choose not to match the gauge given in the pattern, you’d just need to find out what cup size it would fit.  Not matching gauge may not only affect the size of your finished project but how much yarn is needed to complete it.

  • This cup cozy fits small (10 oz cup), medium, (12 oz), large (14 oz) and extra large (16 oz) Tim Hortons and Starbucks to-go coffee cups.

  • The cup cozy is worked from the bottom of the back to the top in one piece. The RS is always facing you.

  • This pattern is worked in joined rounds (unless stated otherwise).  I recommend using a stitch marker to keep track of the beginning of the Round. Tip: If you have a hard time keeping track of the first and last stitches of the Round because of the slip stitch join, place a stitch marker in the first and last stitch of the round, and move them up as you progress.

  • Do not turn at the end of each round unless stated otherwise.

  • To adjust the size of this coffee cozy, create a foundation chain in any even number (multiples of 2).
