What are the Patterns Like?

I found the patterns to be clear and easy to follow.  Patterns include the yarn brand and exact yarn colors used, which was great.

Some patterns included photo tutorial support, while others do not.  Some of the included tutorial photos are incredibly difficult to see due to the use of white yarn on a white background.

Some patterns include simple stitch diagrams, but not all of them.

How Big Are the Toys In This Book?

Toys range in size from 1.5 inches to 8″ tall, making them great for Christmas decor or gifts..

What Terminology Is Used?

Kawaii Crochet Christmas uses US crochet terminology throughout, with a handy US-to-UK conversion chart tucked into the back of the book on page 104. If you’re used to US terms, you’ll feel right at home. If not, the chart makes for a quick and easy translation.

What Skill Levels Are the Patterns?

Projects are labelled using a cute little system of smiling Christmas baubles:

  • Open-mouth smile = Beginner
  • Squinty smile = Easy
  • Closed-mouth smile = Intermediate

Out of the 40 festive crochet cheer-filled patterns, here’s how they break down:

  • 7 Beginner
  • 16 Easy
  • 17 Intermediate

I think the skill level ratings are accurate, with one caveat. The beginner label applies to beginners in amigurumi, not absolute beginners to crochet. You’ll need to be comfortable with essential stitches and following written patterns before jumping in. If you’re new to the world of super cute amigurumi patterns, this book is a great next step once you’ve mastered the basics.

Supports Included for Makers

Most of the helpful supports for makers can be found in the Techniques section at the back of the book (starting on page 102). There’s a solid foundation of info, including:

  • Stitch diagrams and pattern abbreviations
  • How to resize your toys using different yarn weights and crochet hook sizes
  • Tips on reading patterns
  • Written instructions and illustrations for basic stitches and techniques
  • A brief “making up” section with photo support

That said, I do wish there had been more tips specifically for amigurumi beginners. And while some of the toy patterns are accompanied by photos, a few use white yarn on a white background, which can be VERY hard to see, especially for visual learners. Still, experienced makers should feel confident jumping in.

Supplies Needed

Each pattern lists the brand and exact yarn colours used (love that!), and here’s a general roundup of what you’ll want to have on hand for your crafting time:

One note: Gauge is included (which is great if size matters for your christmas décor or gift sets), but no yardage is listed, so plan your yarn stash accordingly.
