How Big Are the Toys?
The toys range in size from 5″ tall to 27″ long
What are the Patterns Like?
The patterns in Mega Yummy Crochet are set up differently than traditional Western crochet patterns you might be used to. Each project begins with an overview of the construction steps, which can feel a little confusing at first. Almost like the stitches themselves are missing. But don’t worry! The actual crochet instructions come after those steps.
It’s an important reminder to always read your crochet patterns from start to finish before picking up your hook. You’ll need to, because those early notes include essential details, like the need to crochet with two strands of yarn held together, which aren’t repeated in the written instructions. (Read my tutorial on how to do hold yarn double here)
I found the patterns to be relatively clear, though I occasionally had to stop and piece together what was being described. As a crochet designer, my familiarity with the basic shapes and construction methods helped me interpret the directions quickly. However, beginners or crocheters who prefer patterns that spell out each step may find the layout challenging at times.
Each design includes stitch diagrams, which are helpful for double-checking your work against the written instructions, if you’re comfortable reading them. The construction step sections feature small illustrations for visual support, though there are no progress or in-pattern photos. Finished sizes are listed, but there’s no gauge information, so your project size may vary depending on yarn choice and tension.

Crochet Terminology
The book uses U.S. crochet terminology, which is easy to miss as it’s noted at the top of page 42. While Miya mentions that U.S. and U.K. terms differ, there isn’t a conversion chart provided.
Skill Level
I could not find a listed skill level in the book other than one reference at the very beginning, stating that beginner crocheters could make the toys quickly. Based on my own experience working with makers and designing patterns, I’d personally rate some of these projects as easy, but most as intermediate.
The pattern writing style and overall layout could be confusing for a beginner unless they’re exceptionally tenacious and willing to troubleshoot with outside resources. When buying a book, I don’t believe makers should need to search online for similarly designed free patterns just to understand how the author has done things. Since I can see that happening fairly often with this title, I wouldn’t consider it a great guide for absolute beginners.

Supports Included for Makers
You’ll find the Tools and Materials section starting on page 40 followed by the Basic Techniques section that includes step-by-step photos of specific techniques used in specific patterns. Instead of including these support images with the patterns themselves, which is handier for the maker, they have grouped them all in the basic techniques section at the beginning of the book.
For example: instead of showing you how to change colors in any project, they show you the exact color changes as they are done in Round 9 of a project, including instructions like “working up to the third stitch”. Makers have to then extrapolate from that how to do it in other projects. An experienced maker should be fine with that.
At the back of the book (pages 135–136), you’ll find a Crochet Stitch Symbols section explaining the chart symbols and basic stitches. Most explanations are clear, though a few (like reverse single crochet) could be expanded a bit.
Supplies Needed
Here’s what you’ll want to have on hand before diving in:
I’ve linked my favorite supplies below to make gathering materials easier.
- Crochet hook sizes: 4.5mm, 7mm, 8mm, 10mm and 15 mm (Q)
- 100% acrylic super bulky and bulky weight yarn (since the recommended yarns aren’t available in North America, these are the ones I would use: Lion Brand, Yarnspirations, WeCrochet, Premier Yarns.
- Toy stuffing
- Yarn needle, felting needle, and sewing needle
- Pom-poms, ribbons, lace trim, beads, and craft glue (<—this glue is my favorite for gluing stuff to yarn)
- Tweezers, bamboo skewers, and stitch markers
The book calls for yarns held double to achieve that oversized amigurumi size quickly.

Final Thoughts on Mega Yummy Crochet
Mega Yummy Crochet is a playful collection of supersized amigurumi treats filled with color, creativity, and fun details that will charm both kids and grown-ups alike.
I love the whimsy, the bold use of color, and how Miya integrates practicality by turning some of these oversized designs into useful everyday crochet projects. That said, the layout, pattern structure and lack of traditional resources may challenege newer crocheters.
I’d recommend this book to experienced makers who love creating food-themed designs or have kids they can gift them to. These oversized amigurumi creations would look adorable in a child’s playroom, a craft-themed studio, or anywhere you’d like a cheerful dose of crochet whimsy.
