When Does the Crochet Along Start?
The first part of the pattern which will be available as a free crochet pattern on the blog will be available on Friday April 5, 2024, and the last part will be released Friday, April 19th.
How Do I Join The Crochet Along?
Good news: there’s not a lot you have to do to participate in the fun!
To be updated when new parts of the pattern become available, I recommend that you join my newsletter here. I’ll send you an email each time a new part goes live.
To join myself and the owner of Keenan Hand Dyed Yarn during our live video sessions each week to be able to ask us questions, join the Google Meeting here. I have shared our Live schedule further down the page below
Skill Level:
This is an EASY level crochet pattern.
I’ve designed this dinosaur amigurumi to use basic stitches and to cover a range of different techniques used in amigurumi like:
- using the magic circle / magic ring,
- working in continuous rounds,
- basic color changes,
- increasing and decreasing single crochet stitches,
- adding safety eyes,
- the ultimate finish,
- sewing open and closed pieces onto your toy,
- using textured stitches like bobbles to add detail,
- and more!
Each part of this pattern will be released with a video tutorial with step-by-step instructions to walk you through the dino pattern.
So if you’re a visual learner or need additional help, you’ll have that assistance at your fingertips. New crocheters may want to follow along with the video tutorial while looking at the written instructions which can help tackle reading amigurumi patterns as well.
Material List:
This list contains shoppable links for your convenience.
Recommended Hook Size:
- 3.25 mm (D) Crochet Hook – I use an ergonomic Furls Crochet Hook
Though this is the hook size I recommend for this yarn and pattern, it’s a good idea to have a few different hook sizes on hand so if you want to match gauge or need to make adjustments for your personal tension, you have the tools do to so.
Yarn:
This toy was designed in collaboration with the wonderful Keenan Hand Dyed Yarn. They have made some lovely kits with this yarn for us which can be purchased from Keenan Hand Dyed Yarn here.
- Keenan Hand Dyed Yarn (100% Peruvian Highland Wool, Worsted Weight Yarn (4), 218yds/199m, 100g/3.5oz), 1 skein each of:
- Colour A: Irish Girl at North Ave. Beach / Natural (approx. 24 yds / 11g)
- Colour B: St. Brigid/ Green (approx. 107 yds / 49g)
- Colour C: You’re Golden / Yellow (approx. 35 yds / 16g)
No worries if you’re not into the kit scene – you can totally join the crochet along using materials you already have at home! 🏡✨
But hey, if you’re feeling the kit vibes, know that grabbing one not only sets you up with some seriously stunning materials but also supports an indie dyer who’s all about making magic with yarn and generously provided the yarn support for this project.
Safety Eyes:
- 20 mm Safety Eyes – I used Silver Glitter Eyes from Chateau Bornais Crochet
Other Notions & Materials:
- Polyester Toy Stuffing (also available at Michaels)
- Tapestry Needle / Yarn Needle
- Scissors
- Multiple Stitch Markers and/or Scrap Pieces of Yarn
- Sewing Pins (optional) – I recommend 1.5″ sewing pins or 2″ corsage pins for amigurumi

FAQs
Q. Can I Sell the Toy Made with One of Your Free Dinosaur Crochet Patterns, Including This CAL Pattern?
- A. This pattern (and all my patterns) are for personal use only. This means that you can sell the finished product made with one of my patterns but businesses looking for mass production are prohibited from doing so (think retailers, etc.). I ask that if you do sell your toys made from my patterns, please credit me as the designer and if possible, link to my blog.
Q. Is This Pattern Accessible For Beginner Crocheters?
- A. While I’ve aimed to provide clear instructions for each step, tackling amigurumi projects can be daunting for absolute beginners (someone picking up a crochet hook for the first time). Yet, if you’re comfortable with basic crochet stitches and eager to dive into the world of amigurumi, fear not! The accompanying video tutorials will help guide you through each step. Check out the list of tutorials below to familiarize yourself with the stitches and techniques we’ll be using before we begin.
Q. What is the Best Yarn to Use With This Pattern?
- A. Although I’ve utilized Keenan Hand Dyed Yarns in this project (and they’re absolutely fabulous), the most important thing is to select a yarn that suits both your preferences and budget. The intention behind using hand-dyed yarn was to demonstrate its versatility beyond traditional uses like sweaters and shawls. However, if it’s not feasible for you at the moment, feel free to use whatever yarn fits your needs best.
Q: Do I have to start when everyone else starts the project on April 5th?
- A: No. You can start at any time as the patterns will remain on the blog and my shops for the foreseeable future.
Q: Is there a hashtag to use when sharing stuff online?
- A. I love to see your wips and finished projects and you can inspire others by sharing your projects on social media by tagging me @theloopylamb or using #theloopylambCAL. I regularly feature maker’s projects in my FB & IG stories that tag me or use the hashtag however, I will always ask permission before doing so.
