What is the Purpose of a Crochet Bowl Cozy?

A bowl cozy is a cover for your bowl to protect your hands (or surfaces like countertops and tables) from the temperature and/or moisture of the bowl.

The most common use is to protect your hands from the heat of the bowl, particularly when taking a bowl of food out of the microwave.

But these bowl covers aren’t just for protecting your hands from hot meals, they’re good for keeping your hands warm too!

My kids love nothing more than to put their freezing cold hands on the small of my back after eating a bowl of ice cream to hear me scream about how cold they are. But now that they each have their own cotton bowl cozies that they use when they eat a cold dessert, they’re hands are nice and toasty when they finish. Score one for Mom!

What is the Best Yarn for Bowl Cozies?

The best yarn to use for crochet bowl cozies is cotton yarn.  I used a cotton worsted weight yarn in this cozy pattern because it is sturdy and helps protect your hands from a hot bowl of soup when you take it out of the microwave.

If you plan to place your cozy in the microwave, do NOT use acrylic yarn.  Acrylic yarn is made of plastic and could melt or emit unsafe fumes in the microwave.

If you plan on just using this for a cereal bowl that will never go in the microwave, you can use whatever yarn you’d like that you can match the gauge with.

For this project I used WeCrochet Dishie yarn because it is a wonderful yarn to work with and comes in a great variety of colors.  Plus, the way this yarn is caked up, it’s easy to pull the yarn from both ends of the skein to hold the yarn double.

How Much Yarn Do I Need?

You’ll need approximately 140 yards of worsted weight cotton yarn to make this crochet project.  This is the perfect project for using up cotton yarn left overs you may have hanging around.

(click the links in this list to view a photo and video tutorial for that stitch/technique)

Finished Size:

  • Approx. 8” wide (measured across the top opening), 4.75” diameter across the bottom. Fits a bowl with a 5 – 6” diameter (easily adjustable)

Gauge:

  • Rounds 1 – 7 = 4.25” across the widest point

NOTES:

  • The recommended hook size for this project is a 6 mm hook, however, use whichever hook is needed to match the gauge given in the pattern.

  • Project is worked from the bottom of the cozy up to the top.

  • This project is crocheted holding two strands of yarn together at the same time, often referred to as “held double”. You can achieve this by pulling the yarn end from both the center and the outside of the yarn ball at the same time or by using two balls of yarn.
  • Instructions within the brackets () are to be repeated the number of times specified next to the brackets.

  • This pattern is worked in continuous rounds (unless stated otherwise).  Do not join at the end of the round, unless indicated.  A stitch marker is used to keep track of the beginning of the round.

  • Gauge is vital to ensuring the cozy fits the bowl as expected and turns out to be the right size.

  • Fit: Expect this cozy to fit very snuggly onto the base of a bowl at first.  With use (and washing) the yarn will relax and fit more loosely.

Making this Crochet Bowl Cozy for Larger Bowls:

  1. After Round 7, continue to increase each round by 6 until you have reached your desired diameter.
  2. After reaching your desired diameter, continue with Rounds 8 – 14, being sure to add any additional rounds if you need added height for a taller bowl.

  3. Once the desired height has been reached, add another increase round, increasing by 6, (make sure this number can be divided by 4). Here are the next few multiples of 4 after 48 when increasing by 6 (60, 72, 84, 96).

  4.  Take the number of stitches from your last round and divide it by 4 (i.e. 60/4=15). This number tells you how many stitches per side of the first round of your cozy handles.  In the above example, you’ll follow the instructions in Round 16 to add a corner (2 DC, CH 2, DC), and then work 1 DC in the next 14 stitches instead of the 11 noted in that Round (the corner uses 1 stitch and then the 14 DCs use the remaining stitches).

  5. For the final round of the cozy handles, you’ll work 1 DC  in each stitch until you reach the chain space for the next corner.  Work the corner in the chain space and then 1 DC in each stitch across until the next chain space, repeating until the end of the round. Use the finishing instructions for Round 17 and then finish off your piece.
