How Is the Image On This Mug Rug Coaster Created?

The technique that is used for this free crochet mug rug pattern is called tapestry crochet.  This means that the image is created using crochet color work.

A colorwork chart is used to follow this pattern.  1 square in the chart = 1 single crochet stitch in that color.  The chart is read from right to left for right-handed crocheters and left to right for left-handed crocheters.

If you’d prefer to have the colour changes written out for you in words, the ad-free PDF version of the pattern includes both the colour chart and the full written version of the pattern.  Ad-free PDF versions of this free crochet mug rug pattern are available in both my Ravelry and Etsy shops.

Because you’re working with 2 strands of yarn at once, you’ll carry the unused yarn colour, inside the stitches you create, by crocheting over them.

How are the Fringe Pieces Created?

The fringe pieces on either side of the mug rug are created by leaving yarn tails on either side of the project to create the gorgeous fringes as well as to help secure your ends.

If you don’t want the tassels, you can weave in your ends if you choose but I think it adds to the rug feel of my little crochet mug rug.  Plus, who really wants to weave in ends?

Can I Use Acrylic Yarn With This Free Mug Rug Crochet Pattern?

For this project, I used my favourite multi-purpose cotton yarn: WeCrochet Dishie.  Cotton is my personal preference for coasters and mug rugs because of it’s durabilty and washability. Plus, I love Dishie because it has a ton of different colours to pick from.

However, you can use your favorite yarn or even leftover yarn from another project to make this mug rug.  Acrylic yarn is perfectly fine to use as most mugs won’t get hot enough to melt acrylic yarn.

I would only recommend that you use a washable yarn since you’re likely going to get coffee or tea on your mug rug at some point.

Finished Size:

  • 5.5” tall by 5.5” wide not including fringe

Gauge:

  • 23 sts x 16 rows = 4 inches

NOTES:

  • Gauge is not vital to the pattern but it may affect the size of your project and the amount of yarn required

  • This entire project is worked in rows worked in the BLO (back loops only).   When reattaching your yarn at the start of a Row, attach your yarn with a SC Join (see special stitches) or a SL ST under both loops of the first ST.  The right side of the project should always be facing you.
  • Carry unused colors and crochet over them as you work.

  • When starting each row, leave a tail a few inches long of both main colours (Color A and Color B) hanging on the edge of your work so you will have fringe on both sides.

  • Start Rows 2-22 by reattaching the main color yarn to the first ST of the previous Row and carrying the yarn inside your stitches.

  • At the end of the row, fasten off both colors, leaving a yarn tail of a few inches to create your fringe (you’ll trim it up at the end).

  • When reading the colorwork chart 1 square = 1 SC stitch.  Read the chart from right to left, starting in the bottom-right hand corner (for right-handed crocheters) and left to right, starting in the bottom-left hand corner for left-handed crocheters.

  • Color changes are done using the last yarn over of the last stitch before it says to add the new color.
