I love to make quick and easy crochet projects. When I designed my first free crochet mug rug pattern, I was hooked and I haven’t been able to stop making them since!
Today’s free crochet mug rug pattern is for the It’s Coffee Time Crochet Mug Rug. This is an easy crochet pattern, made with basic crochet stitches that makes great gifts. To top it all off, there are no ends to weave in!
So whether you’re making these for gifts, for market or just as quick projects when you need to feel productive, this free crochet mug rug pattern fits the bill.

How Is the Image On This Mug Rug Coaster Created?
The technique that is used for this free crochet mug rug pattern is called tapestry crochet. This means that the image is created using crochet color work.
A colorwork chart is used to follow this pattern. 1 square in the chart = 1 single crochet stitch in that color. The chart is read from right to left for right-handed crocheters and left to right for left-handed crocheters.
If you’d prefer to have the colour changes written out for you in words, the ad-free PDF version of the pattern includes both the colour chart and the full written version of the pattern. Ad-free PDF versions of this free crochet mug rug pattern are available in both my Ravelry and Etsy shops.
Because you’re working with 2 strands of yarn at once, you’ll carry the unused yarn colour, inside the stitches you create, by crocheting over them.
How are the Fringe Pieces Created?
The fringe pieces on either side of the mug rug are created by leaving yarn tails on either side of the project to create the gorgeous fringes as well as to help secure your ends.
If you don’t want the tassels, you can weave in your ends if you choose but I think it adds to the rug feel of my little crochet mug rug. Plus, who really wants to weave in ends?

Can I Use Acrylic Yarn With This Free Mug Rug Crochet Pattern?
For this project, I used my favourite multi-purpose cotton yarn: WeCrochet Dishie. Cotton is my personal preference for coasters and mug rugs because of it’s durabilty and washability. Plus, I love Dishie because it has a ton of different colours to pick from.
However, you can use your favorite yarn or even leftover yarn from another project to make this mug rug. Acrylic yarn is perfectly fine to use as most mugs won’t get hot enough to melt acrylic yarn.
I would only recommend that you use a washable yarn since you’re likely going to get coffee or tea on your mug rug at some point.

NOTES:
- Gauge is not vital to the pattern but it may affect the size of your project and how much yarn is required.
- This pattern is worked from the bottom of the coaster to the top.
- A 3.5mm crochet hook is the recommended for this pattern but I suggest using whatever hook size needed to create a tight, closed fabric free of holes, or whatever hook size needed to match the given gauge.
- If you find that you have holes in your fabric or the yarn you’re carrying is showing through using the recommended hook size, try going down a hook size until you create a tight fabric with no holes in it and no stuffing is showing through.
- If you find that you have holes in your fabric or the yarn you’re carrying is showing through using the recommended hook size, try going down a hook size until you create a tight fabric with no holes in it and no stuffing is showing through.
- This entire project is worked in rows with single crochet stitches worked in the BLO (back loops only). The right side/front side of the project is always facing you. Do not turn your work.
- Reading the Colorwork Chart: Read the chart starting in the bottom right-hand corner of the chart (for right-handed people) and start in the bottom left-hand corner of the chart for left-handed people.
- Each box in the color chart = 1 SC stitch. Work all stitches in the BLO. Each new row starts in the first box on the right-hand side of the chart for right-handed people and on the left-hand side of the chart for left-handed people and finishes in the last box of that round on the opposite side.
- Each box in the color chart = 1 SC stitch. Work all stitches in the BLO. Each new row starts in the first box on the right-hand side of the chart for right-handed people and on the left-hand side of the chart for left-handed people and finishes in the last box of that round on the opposite side.
- Color changes are done using the last YO of the last stitch before the color change is indicated.
- Carry unused yarn colors and crochet over them as you work.
- Start Rows 2-22 by reattaching the main color yarn to the first ST of the previous Row and carrying the yarn inside your stitches.
- When reattaching your yarn at the start of a Row, attach your SL ST under both loops of the first ST or use a standing SC/SC Join stitch, worked under both loops to replace the SL ST join and the first SC stitch of the Row.
- When starting each row, leave a tail a few inches long of both main colours worked in that row hanging from the edge of your work so you will have fringe on both sides.
- Each row ends by fastening off both colours, leaving a yarn tail of a few inches to create your fringe (you’ll trim it up at the end).

Using Colour A, CH 32.
Start Row 1 by working the first stitch of Row 1 in the 2nd CH from the hook.
FO.
Fringe:
Holding a few strands of the fringe together at a time, on one side, tie an overhand knot to create tassels along the side of your work and secure the yarn ends.
Once all the “tassels” are created, trim the fringe so it’s all the same length.
Steam block, if desired.
