Crochet Mini Santa Hat for Amigurumi Snowman Tutorial

Mini holiday projects are always a joy to make, and today I’m sharing my mini crochet Santa hat pattern that’s designed to fit the Chillin’ With My Snowmies No Sew Snowman. This tiny hat works up quickly with basic stitches and adds a little festive flair to your handmade snowmen. It’s sized for amigurumi, so it may also fit other small toys with a similar head size, making it a fun little accessory to add to your holiday display.

You’ll find step-by-step written instructions below, including details for both the mini and jumbo snowmen, plus a video tutorial to help you follow along.

About This Mini Crochet Santa Hat Pattern

This amigurumi snowman hat pattern is designed to fit my Jumbo and Mini No Sew Crochet Snowmen patterns.  You’ll find two material lists: one to make the project with a medium weight / worsted weight yarn for the mini snowman and one to use chenille yarn to make it for the jumbo snowman.  The instructions to make the Santa hat are the same for both, the only difference is the materials used. The size of the finished hat will be larger or smaller depending on the materials you choose.

Want Other Hats for Your Amigurumi Snowman?

This pattern is part of my Dress-Up Snowman Collection, designed for my Chillin’ With My Snowmies No Sew Snowman pattern.  There are 3 different hats in the collection: a beanie, a top hat and a santa hat.  You can grab them all in a printable, ad-free PDF in my Ravelry and Etsy shops or wait until they become ad-supported free patterns here on my blog in the coming week.

Will This Mini Santa Hat Fit Other Amigurumi Patterns?

Possibily!  It depends on the head size of your toy. I’ve included measurements below, but since tension, stuffing amounts, and yarn choices vary so much between amigurumi makers, the best way to know is to try the hat on as you go. These little hats are designed in a way that you can test the fit early on.

What Else Can I Used My Mini Santa Hats For?

If you make your crochet hats using a worsted weight (4) or DK (3) yarn, these adorable mini hats can be used in a few different ways during the holiday season:

  • Add a tie or hanger to the top and use them as cute Christmas tree ornaments
  • Use the hat to decorate the top of a wine bottle
  • For decorating wreaths and garlands. String a few together to make a full garland of them.
  • Use it for Barbie dolls and smaller toys
  • Add a handmade touch to your gift wrapping by topping your gift with one

Special Stitches and Techniques:

Finished Size:

  • Mini Snowman: Approx. 4” tall when crocheted to gauge.
  • Jumbo Snowman Hats:  Approx 11” tall (excluding pom-pom)

Gauge:

  • Gauge Swatch:
Round 1: Using Color A in the yarn weight that you’re using, make a MC and SC 6 into the MC. (6)

    Round 2: (SCINC) x 6. (12)

    Round 3: (SC, SCINC) x 6. (18)

    Round 4: SC, SCINC, (SC 2, SCINC) x 5, SC. (24)
  • Mini Snowman: Rounds 1 – 4 of gauge swatch= 1.5” across at the widest point.
  • Jumbo Snowman: Rounds 1 – 4 of gauge swatch = 3.5” across at the widest point.

Notes:

  • The hats for both snowmen are made using the same pattern; the only changes are the materials used.

  • Gauge is not vital to the toy, but not matching gauge will affect the size of your finished toy and the amount of yarn used. Use a consistent tension throughout the toy to create a tight fabric so that stuffing does not show through your stitches.

    • The hook sizes given in this pattern are the recommended hook sizes however, I suggest using whatever hook size needed to create a tight, closed fabric free of holes, or whatever hook size needed to match the given gauge.

    • If you find that you have holes in your fabric using the recommended hook size, try going down a hook size until you create a tight fabric with no holes in it and no stuffing is showing through.

    • Reading the Pattern: Instructions in brackets: I.e.: (SC, SCINC) x 6, this means you’ll work 1 SC stitch in the first stitch and then SCINC in the next and you’ll repeat that pattern a total of 6 times.

    • Numbers indicated in () at the end of a Round/Row indicate the number of stitches you should have at the end of the Round/Row. I recommend counting your stitches at the end of each Round/Row before moving on to the next.

    • Where SC followed by a number (i.e. SC 14), you’ll work 1 SC stitch in the next 14 stitches or chains, unless the pattern specifies to work those stitches into the same stitch or chain.

  • The Santa Hat is worked from the bottom-up.   After Round 2, it is worked in continuous rounds as well.

  • For a cleaner SCDEC, do your SCDEC under the front loops only of each ST rather than under both loops.  This is often referred to as an invisible decrease.  Find my tutorial on how to do this here: https://theloopylamb.com/how-to-do-an-invisible-decrease/

  • If you crocheted your snowman using regular single crochet, I recommend using regular single crochet for the hats as well. If you used yarn under single crochet, then use yarn under for the hats as well.

Round 3: Join Color B to the first ST of Round 2, with a SC Join (see Special Stitches & Techniques) or a SL ST, CH 1 and SC in the first ST.  SC in each remaining ST around. (24)

Round 11: (SC 3, SCDEC) x 3. (12)

Rounds 12 – 13: SC around. (12)

Round 14: (SC 2, SCDEC) x 3. (9)

Rounds 15 – 16: SC around. (9)

Round 17: (SC, SCDEC) x 3. (6)

Rounds 18 – 20: SC around. (6)

FO leaving a long yarn tail.  Thread the yarn tail onto a tapestry needle and weave it through the FLO of the last around.  Pull yarn tail to cinch hole closed.  Weave in ends.  Fold the top of the hat over to one side and use a piece of yarn in Color A to secure the top part of the hat to the side of the hat to keep it bent in half.  I recommend putting the hat on the snowman to gauge placement and then sewing the top part down.  Make a pom-pom using yarn in Color A for the Mini Snowman and Color E for the Jumbo Snowman and add it to the tip of the hat using your yarn tail.  Learn how to make and attach a yarn pom pom here.
