When I first started designing, my very first design was a crochet cactus. I’m terrible with plants and I wanted a plant that I couldn’t kill. Once I started, I couldn’t stop making them! It didn’t take long for me to start giving personalities to my toys and some of my first personalities to create were christmas cacti. This amigurumi christmas cactus pattern was initially published on the Made With a Twist blog as part of her first 30 Days of Cozy bundle but I’m happy to say that the pattern has been updated and is now available here on my own blog. This pattern was one of the first patterns I ever published and I’m so happy to finally have it here on my blog to share with you.

Stanley the Snowman Cactus – Amigurumi Christmas Cactus Pattern

- 3.5 mm (E) Odyssey Crochet Hook
- Bernat Premium (100% Acrylic, Worsted Weight (4) medium, 360 yds/329m, 198g/6.98 oz), 1 Ball Each of the Following:
- Spring Green
- Red
- White
- Loops & Threads Impeccable Solid (100% Acrylic, Worsted Weight (4) medium, 285 yds/260m, 127.5g/4.5 oz), 1 Ball Each of the Following:
- Chocolate Brown
- Pumpkin
- 8 mm Safety Eyes
- Stitch Marker
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle
- Polyester Stuffing
- Pot For Your Cactus (See Notes)
- Beads to Decorate Hat (optional)
Abbreviations:
- CH = Chain
- FLO = Front Loop Only
- FO = Finish Off
- MC = Magic Circle
- SC = Single Crochet
- SCDEC = Single Crochet Decrease
- SCINC = Single Crochet Increase
- SLST = Slip Stitch
- BLO = Back Loop Only

Finished Size:
- Approx. 8.5” tall from bottom of soil to top of hat once assembled.
NOTES:
- The Soil, Top Hat and Nose sections of this pattern are worked in continuous rounds (unless stated otherwise). Do not join at the end of the Round, unless indicated. A stitch marker is used to keep track of the beginning of the round.
- For a cleaner SCDEC, do your SCDEC under the front loops only of each stitch rather than under both loops. This is often referred to as an invisible decrease. Check out my invisible decrease tutorial.
- Gauge is not vital to the project but maintaining the same gauge/tension throughout your project will ensure that your pieces fit accordingly.
- The size of the pot you will require will depend on how big your soil turns out which can vary depending on your tension and how much you stuff it.

SOIL
Round 1: Using brown yarn, make a MC and SC 6 into the MC (6)
Round 2: (SCINC) x 6 (12)
Round 3: (SCINC, SC 1) x 3 (18)
Round 4: SC, SCINC, (SC 2, SCINC) x 5, SC 1 (24)
Round 5: (SCINC, SC 3) x 6 (30)
Round 6: SC 2, SCINC (SC 4, SCINC) x 5, SC 2 (36)
Rounds 7 – 16: SC around (36)
Round 17: SC 2, SCDEC (SC 4, SCDEC) x 5, SC 2 (30)
Round 18: (SCDEC, SC 3) x 6 (24)
Round 19: SC 1, SCDEC, (SC 2, SCDEC) x 5, SC 1 (18)
Round 20: (SCDEC, SC 1) x 6 (12)
Round 21: (SCDEC) x 6 (6)
FO and weave in ends.
Large Portion of Cactus Body
Using green and leaving a long tail, CH 20.
Row 1: SC in the 2nd CH from the hook and in each CH across. (19)
Row 2: CH 1 and turn. SC in the first ST. SC in the BLO of the next 17 STs. SC under both loops of the last ST. (19)
Repeat Row 2 until the piece measures 16 cm.
FO, leaving a long tail. Work a running stitch along the long side of the cactus, working into the row ends. Pull the yarn tight to close the cactus (like a drawstring). Without fastening off, seam the two short sides together by putting the needle through the bottom loop of both stitches to recreate the ribbing effect for the seam. Stuff firmly.
Work a running stitch along the open edge and pull tightly to close the cactus completely. Secure and weave in your ends. Sew onto soil.
Small Portion of Cactus Body/Head
Using green and leaving a long tail, CH 16.
Row 1: SC in the 2nd CH from the hook and in each CH across. (15)
Row 2: CH 1 and turn. SC in the first ST. SC in the BLO of the next 13 STs. SC under both loops of the last ST. (15)
Repeat row 2 until the piece measures 12 cm.
FO, leaving a long tail. Insert your safety eyes slightly above the middle of the piece with 2 rows between them. Work a running stitch along the long side of the cactus, working into the row ends. Pull the yarn tight to close the cactus (like a drawstring). Without fastening off, seam the two short sides together by putting the needle through the bottom loop of both stitches to recreate the ribbing effect for the seam.
Stuff firmly. Work a running stitch along the open edge and pull tightly to close the cactus completely. Secure and weave in your ends. Sew the head tightly onto the body.
Arms (Make Two)
Using brown yarn, CH 7
Row 1: SL ST into the 2nd CH from the hook. SL ST into the next CH. CH 3 and SL ST into the 2nd and 3rd CHs from the hook. SL ST into the remaining 3 CHs. (8)
FO leaving a long tail and sew onto either side of the body.
Top Hat
Round 1: Using black yarn, make a MC and SC 6 into the ring. (6)
Round 2: (SCINC) x 6 (12)
Round 3: (SCINC, SC 1) x 6 (18)
Round 4: (SC 8, SCINC) x 2 (20)
Round 5: In the BLO, SC in the first ST and in each ST around. (20)
Rounds 6 –8: SC in each stitch around. (20)
Round 9: (SC 8, SCDEC) x 2 (18)
Round 10: SC in each ST around. (18)
Round 11: (SC 7, SCDEC) x 2 (16)
Round 12: In the FLO, (SC 1, SCINC) X 8 (24)
Rounds 13 – 14: Working in both loops, SC in each stitch around. (24)
Round 15: (SC 1, SCINC) x 12 (36)
Round 16: SL ST in each ST around. (36)
FO and leave a long tail for sewing the hat onto the head. If using beads to decorate the hat, add them now. Lightly stuff the hat to help keep its shape. Sew onto head.
Nose
Row 1: Using orange yarn, make a MC and SC 3 into the ring (3)
Row 2: (SCINC) x 3 (6)
Rows 3 – 4: SC around (6)
FO and leave a long tail to attach to the head. Stuff nose and sew onto head.
Scarf
Using red yarn, CH 61.
Row 1: SC in the 2nd ST from the hook and in each ST across. CH 1 and turn. (60)
Row 2: SC in the first ST and in each ST across. (60)
FO and weave in ends. Wrap the scarf around the cactus, just above the arms and you can either sew the scarf onto body at the point where the scarf crosses over itself or tie the scarf to the cactus.
