A Solution for A Frantic Crocheter in Need of A Quick Gift
I totally panicked the other day when I was going through my Christmas gift planner (get your free copy here) and realized just how behind I was on making all the crochet projects I had planned for gifting this year. Rather than get totally stressed out and throw myself a pity party, I pulled myself together and made an action plan.
My goal: create something quick and easy that I could make on repeat for a ton of family members. I wanted it to be so easy that even an absolute beginner should be able to pump out dozens of these by the holidays.
So, I pulled out a skein of yarn (super chunky, of course) and one of the biggest crochet hooks I own. Less than an hour later, I had created an easy crochet cowl that I could share as a free pattern with you here today.

How Quickly Can You Crochet This Cowl?
When I say this cowl works up super quick, I mean it. I was able to get one done in an hour with two little kids running around like our house is some modern version of The Lord of the Flies.
How fast you can make it however, depends on your personal speed but, if you are in a bind and need a last-minute gift, make this your new go-to.
What Other Yarns Would Work With This Chunky Cowl Crochet Pattern?
You can substitute your favourite super chunky yarns if the suggested yarn is not available to you or if you have another yarn you’d prefer to use. Here are some other yarns that would make great substitutions to get you started:
- Lion Brand Yarn Mandala Thick & Quick
- Lion Brand Hometown
- Katia Canada
- Plymouth Yarn Encore Mega
- Paintbow Yarns Wool Blend Super Chunky
- Hobbii Amigo Giga
How Can I Make this Cowl a Different Size?
Because this simple cowl uses basic crochet stitches, it’s very simple to make it i a different size. So you can use this to turn your cowl into an infinity scarf or make it for a child. Create a chain in multiples of 2 to your desired length and then follow the written instructions and continue the row repeat until you’ve reached your desired height.

Can I use a n-10 hook to make the super quick chunky cowl
You could, if you matched gauge but that may be difficult with a 10mm hook. Otherwise, you would have to increase the number of chains you do at the beginning.
