Easy Crochet Cowl Pattern – Strut Your Puff Cowl

It is officially fall and I feel like I can now officially start sharing all the cold-weather crochet projects! I’ve been working on this crochet cowl pattern for a while with the goal of creating an easy crochet cowl pattern that is accessible to beginners but doesn’t cheap out on texture. Throw in some fall-inspired colours and you’ve got yourself a beautiful crochet cowl that you may have a hard time parting with if you initially planned to use this as a gift.

The yarn for this design was generously provided by our friends at WeCrochet. When I was initially asked to participate in the Puff the Magic Stitch Blog hop, I was given an option of WeCrochet yarn to use for this design and it was a pretty simple choice for me to make. I went with WeCrochet’s Swish Worsted Weight yarn. I used it in last year’s Picot stitch blog hop for my Picot Me Up Ear Warmer and Cowl pattern and it was love at first stitch. This yarn is buttery soft, comes in great colours and is great to work with. I love it so much. It is delightful next to skin and paired with the puff stitches in this cowl, it makes for a completely lovely wearable.

For the Strut Your Puff Crochet Cowl, I used the colours copper (my FAVOURITE), cobblestone heather, dove heather and white. I’m a bit obsessed with the copper colour so I knew I had to use it in this design. Check out Swish Worsted Weight yarn and all it’s colours here on the WeCrochet Website.

When I say that the Strut Your Puff Crochet Cowl pattern is easy, I mean it. It has a simple row repeat and there isn’t any need for any crazy amounts of counting or keeping track of stitches. This is a great project to work on in front of the tv and you could be finished your cowl after a couple of hours. I’ve also used basic crochet stitches to create the fabric of this cowl and there is a crochet tutorial on this blog for every stitch that you’re going to use in this project so if you are still learning or forgotten how to do a stitch, you can just click on the name of the stitch in the abbreviations section of this post and be taken to a stitch tutorial that has both photo and video versions to help you out.

The crochet puff stitch used in this design does require you to maintain an even tension as you work your puff stitches to keep them neat and tidy. Make sure that you take the time to read the description on how to do the puff stitch for this project as this design requires that you do a CH-1 to close your puff stitch. The CH-1 is then followed up with a skipped stitch to maintain stitch count as well as to avoid crowding of the puff stitches. If you find that your puff stitches are crowding/warping, check to make sure that you’ve done that ch-1, skip one in your puff stitch rounds.

This crochet cowl will definitely keep your neck warm during the cold-weather months. I just hate being caught out in the cold weather with nothing to block the wind from my face so I designed this cowl to be tall enough that you can pull it up and over your lower face to help block out the wind. I designed this at the end of the summer for fall so unfortunately, I was unable to get fun wintery photos of it for us so let’s just pretend that it wasn’t 100 degrees outside while I was taking these photos lol.

• Approx. 12 sts x 17 rows = 4 inches in main body texture

Easy Crochet Cowl Pattern – Strut Your Puff Crochet Cowl

Using Colour A, CH 100. 

Round 1: Join last CH to first CH with a SL ST, taking care not to twist CH. CH 2,(counts as first DC), DC in the next CH and each CH around.  Join last ST to first ST with a SL ST (from here on referred to as “Join”. (100)

Round 2: CH 2, FPDC around the 2^nd DC, BPDC around the next, *FPDC around the next DC, BPDC around the next DC, repeat from * across until last ST, FPDC around last ST.  Join.

Rounds 3 – 4: Repeat Round 2

Change to Colour B

Round 5: CH 1, HDC in first ST, CH 1, SK 1, *HDC, CH 1, SK 1, repeat from * across. Join.

Change to Colour C

Round 6: CH 1, HDC in first ST and each ST and CH-SP across. Join.
