Crocheted Coasters Free Pattern

I’ve made a bunch of these crochet xmas coasters to give to family members to use in their holiday decor this year. Because the yarn tails are used to create the tassels on the sides of the coaster, there are minimal ends to weave in. Make sure that you read the notes about how to do this before getting started.

To create the image of the holly on these cute coasters, we’re going to use a technique called tapestry crochet. This is a crochet colourwork technique that utilizes a chart to illustrate the image and assign a colour to each stitch in the chart.

How to Read the Colorwork Chart

Right-handed crocheters will need to read the tapestry chart from right to left for each row and left-handed crocheters will need to read the chart from left to right for each row. Each square in the chart represents one stitch in your project. This entire project is worked in single crochet stitches.

Creating a tapestry crochet coaster like this couldn’t be easier so take your time and have fun! If you’d prefer to have the color changes written out for you in words, the ad-free PDF version of the pattern includes both the color chart and the full written version of the pattern.

You’ll need four different colors of yarn to crochet this crochet Christmas coaster pattern. White yarn, black yarn, green yarn and red yarn. For the best results, I suggest only carrying the two main colors from beginning to end for the row you’re working – attaching the other less-used colors only as you need them.

This helps minimize how bulky your tassels are on each side of your coaster and helps with potential peek-throughs.

Tips for Managing Peek-Throughs on You Crochet Christmas Coaster

If you find that you are starting to see the yarn you carry peek through the front of your coaster, here are some times to prevent or fix that:

• for the odd peek through, you can use the tip of a yarn needle, hook or pin and pull the offending color to the back of your coaster
  
  
• if you have a ton of peek-through:
  
  • try changing up your crochet hook size to a small hook
    
  • try tightening up your tension

But What About the Back of the Coaster?

Once you have enough practice, the image on the back of the coaster shouldn’t look too different from the front. If you don’t like the back of each coaster, you can always add a bit of felt or fabric to the back of the coaster using some fabric fusion glue. I’ve never had anyone comment on the back of the coaster (they’re too busy looking at the front!) so this is an optional step.

• WeCrochet Dishie (100% Cotton Yarn, Worsted Weight (4), 190 yds/174 m) 1 ball each in the following colours:
  • White (approx. 35 yds)
  • Black (approx. 21 yds)
  • Fiesta Red (approx. 8 yds)
  • Jalapeno (approx. 16 yds)
    
    
• Scissors
  
  
• Tapestry Needle / Yarn Needle

Abbreviations:

• BLO = Back Loop Only
  
  
• CH = Chain
  
  
• ST = Stitch
  
  
• SL ST = Slip Stitch
  
  
• SC = Single Crochet

Finished Size:

• 5.5” tall by 5.5” wide not including fringe

Gauge:

• 23 sts x 16 rows = 4 inches

NOTES:

• Gauge is not vital for this crochet coaster pattern but it may affect the size of your project and the amount of yarn required.
  
  
• This simple crochet coaster pattern is worked from the bottom of the coaster to the top.
  
  
• A 3.5mm crochet hook is the recommended for this pattern but I suggest using whatever hook size needed to create a tight, closed fabric free of holes, or whatever hook size needed to match the given gauge.
  
  
  • If you find that you have holes in your fabric or the yarn you’re carrying is showing through using the recommended hook size, try going down a hook size until you create a tight fabric with no holes in it and no stuffing is showing through.
    
     
• Reading the Colorwork Chart: Read the chart starting in the bottom right-hand corner of the chart (for right-handed people) and start in the bottom left-hand corner of the chart for left-handed people.
  
  
  • Each box in the color chart = 1 SC stitch. Work all stitches in the BLO. Each new round starts in the first box on the right-hand side of the chart for right-handed people and on the left-hand side of the chart for left-handed people and finishes in the last box of that round on the opposite side.
    
    
• To change your yarn color, use the last YO of the last stitch before the color change is indicated.
  
  
• Carry unused colors and crochet over them as you work.
  
  
• This entire project is worked in rows worked in the BLO (back loops only).  When reattaching your yarn at the start of a Row, attach your SLST under both loops of the first ST.
  
  
• When reattaching your yarn at the start of a Row, attach your SL ST under both loops of the first ST or use a standing SC/SC Join stitch, worked under both loops to replace the SL ST join and the first SC stitch of the Row.
  
  
• Start Rows 2-22 by reattaching the main color yarn to the first SC of the previous Row. with the right side facing you and carrying the yarn inside your stitches.
  
  
• When starting each row, leave a tail a few inches long of both main colors
  (white & black) worked in that row hanging on the edge of your work so you will have fringe on both sides.
  
  
• Each row ends by fastening off both main colors (white and black), leaving a tail of a few inches to create your fringe (you’ll trim it up at the end)
  
  
• Attach secondary yarn colors (red & green) as needed in the pattern but do not carry the yarn to the end of the row.  Cut the yarn when finished with these colors in each row and weave in the ends. 
  • Alternatively, these colors can be attached and carried as outlined above and you won’t need to weave in any ends however, colors may be more likely to peek through the fabric doing that.
