To create the image of the word of the baby penguin on our Crochet Penguin Coaster, we’re going to use a technique called tapestry crochet. This is a crochet colourwork technique technique that utilizes a chart to illustrate the image and assign a colour to each stitch in the chart. If you are right-handed you will need to read the tapestry chart from right to left for each row. If you are left-handed crocheters, read the chart from left to right for each row.
The entire crochet coaster is done in single crochet stitches, so no fancy stitches are required to create this project. Each square in the chart represents one single crochet stitch in your project. Creating a tapestry crochet coaster like this couldn’t be easier so take your time and have fun! If you’d prefer to have the colour changes written out for you in words, the ad-free PDF version of the pattern includes both the colour chart and the full written version of the pattern. Ad-free PDF versions of this Crochet Penguin Coaster are available in both my Ravelry and Etsy shops.
Matching the gauge given in this pattern isn’t isn’t critical but, please keep in mind that if you don’t match gauge, it may affect the size of your coaster and how much yarn you will use. Yarn yardage given for this project is approximate and based on the gauge given.

Is the yarn that you are carrying behind your stitches showing through? Try going down a hook size or two or making your tension tighter so that there is less room for the yarn to show through.
How the 2021 Holiday Stashdown CAL Works
Every Monday and Thursday from October 4 through December 16, 2021, we’ll share a free crochet pattern by a different designer. Each pattern will be a one-skein project, or a stashbuster/scrappy project, so you can work from your own existing yarn stash to make a great winter holiday gift, decoration, or wrap. If you’d like to go ahead and buy some yarn just for the project, we won’t stop you! We love yarn as much as you do.
We’ve teamed up with 18 wonderful companies – AdKnits, Babé Crochet, BonnieKreger, Brown Sheep Company, Inc., Chetnanigans, EngravingForYou, Eucalan, GurumiSupply, Hooked for Life Publishing, JitterBeanMugs, KnitPal, Knitter’s Relief Balm, Kraemer Yarns, Space Cadet, SweetBrieCreations, TheCrafterWithinUs, Unicorn, and Walnut Farm Designs – to gather 20 amazing prizes for our end-of-CAL giveaway. Don’t forget to enter the giveaway in this post on Underground Crafter by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, December 31, 2021!

NOTES:
- Gauge is not vital to the pattern but it may affect the size of your project and the amount of yarn required
- Carry unused colours and crochet over them as you work.
- This entire project is worked in rows of single crochet worked in the BLO (back loops only). When reattaching your yarn at the start of a Row, attach your SLST under both loops of the first ST.
- When starting each row, leave a tail a few inches long of both main colours worked in that row hanging on the edge of your work so you will have fringe on both sides.
- Each row ends by fastening off both colours, leaving a tail of a few inches to create your fringe (you’ll trim it up at the end)
- Start Rows 2-22 by reattaching the main color yarn to the first ST of the previous Row and carrying the yarn inside your stitches. In rows utilizing only one colour, carry another strand of yarn inside your stitches.
