Free Crochet Doll Romper Pattern & Video Tutorial

This week I have another piece of doll clothing to add to our doll’s wardrobe: it’s a crochet doll romper pattern! This is one of my favorite outfits that we have made for our amigurumi dolls so far. Included in this free crochet pattern are detailed instructions as well as a step-by-step video tutorial.

This pattern is Week 18 of the Amigurumi Advent Calendar Crochet Along and is designed to fit my Advent Amy doll pattern which is a 10 inch doll when crocheted to gauge. However, it could fit a number of my other amigurumi doll patterns that I have available.

How to Crochet a Doll Romper:

This crochet doll rompoer is crocheted from the bottom-up, which means that we will crochet each leg of the romper separately and then join them. Then we will work on the body and then the straps of our romper. Once that is completed, we will crochet two pockets and sew them onto the front of our romper.

The tops of the pockets are left open because my little girl insisted that the pockets be functional. In my sample, I used two different colors of yarn to create contrast but feel free to use the same color if that is your preference. I’ve seen some folks use variegated yarns for their pockets which also creates a cool contrast so have fun and experiment. This little detail can have a big impact.

If this is your first time making different outfits for dolls, it’s important to know that gauge is important to ensure the clothes fit your doll (just like real crochet garments!). If you don’t plan to match the gauge given in the pattern, make sure that you maintain a consistent tension throughout your projects as that will help minimize issues. Using the same yarn brand throughout your projects can also help minimize changes in tension. This isn’t full-proof of course, but it does help.

It is hard to believe that we are approaching the last section of free doll clothes patterns that will release as part of this crochet along. It has been a lot of work to design all of these patterns, test them, photograph them and create videos. My husband (who kindly edits all of the photos and videos for my blog) and I have put in hundreds of hours of work into hosting this crochet along. Special Techniques and Stitches:

• Invisible Finish/Join: FO leaving a long tail. Thread the tail onto a tapestry needle.  Place the tapestry needle through the top of the 2^nd ST from front to back and pull through.  Place tip of needle into top of the last ST of the round, under the back loop of the stitch, and pull through to the back of the work.  Weave in the end. Learn how to do this with my invisible finish/join tutorial.
  
  

Finished Size:

• Clothing to fit Advent Amy Doll which is approximately 10.5” tall.

Gauge:

• Clothing: 4 sts across x 6 rows = 1” square.
  
  
• Doll: Rounds 1 – 4 of the Leg = 1.5” across at widest point.

 

Notes:

• Gauge is important for ensuring that all of the parts of your doll fit appropriately.  If you don’t plan to match gauge, ensure that you maintain a consistent tension throughout your project. 
  
  
• Most of the pieces are worked back and forth in turned rows, unless noted.  Read instructions for each piece carefully before starting to crochet.
  
  
• For pieces worked in continuous rounds, a stitch marker is used to marker the first ST of the round and is moved up in each consecutive round.

• CH 2 in Round 6 of the body of the bear counts as a ST.
  
  
• You may need to fold down the ears of the bear for it to fit into the advent box.

Free Crochet Doll Romper Step-By-Step Video Tutorial:

Pant Leg 1:

Using Colour L, CH 20, join last CH to first CH with a SL ST, taking care not to twist the CH.

Round 1: CH 1, SC around.  Join last ST to first ST with a SL ST (from here on out referred to as “Join”). (20)

Rounds 2 – 4: CH 1 and turn.  SC around.  Join. (20)

FO.

Pant Leg 2:

Using Colour L, CH 20, join last CH to first CH with a SL ST, taking care not to twist the CH.

Round 1: CH 1, SC around.  Join. (20)

Rounds 2 – 4: CH 1 and turn.  SC around.  Join. (20)

Do NOT FO. We will continue on to join the pant legs and create the rest of the romper.

Round 5: CH 2.  SC in the last ST of Round 4 of Pant Leg 1 and PM in second CH (it will now be our first, marked ST in subsequent rounds), SC 19 around Pant Leg 1, SC in each of the 2 CHs, SC in last ST of Round 4 of Pant Leg 2, SC 19, SC in the CH. Join with SL ST to the marked CH. (44 – CH 1 of first 2 CHs counts as a ST)

Round 6: CH 1 and turn.  SC around.  Join. (44)

Round 7: CH 1 and turn.  SCDEC, SC 42. Join. (43)

Round 8: CH 1 and turn.  SC around. Join. (43)

Round 9: CH 1 and turn.  SC 41, SCDEC. Join (42)

Round 10: CH 1 and turn.  SC in each ST around. Join. (42)

Round 11: CH 1 and turn.  SCDEC, SC 40. Join (41)

Round 12: CH 1 and turn.  SC in each ST around. Join. (41)

Round 13: CH 1 and turn.  SC 39, SCDEC. Join. (40)

Round 14: CH 1 and turn.  SC in each ST around.  Do NOT join. Continue working in unjoined rounds. (40)

Rounds 15 – 19: CH 1 and turn.  SC in each ST around. (40)

Round 29: CH 1 and turn.  SC in each ST and CH across. (28)

FO and weave in ends. Using sewing needle and thread, sew a button on the romper, across from the CH-6 space from Rows 20 & 28. Use the CH-6 space to fasten the romper closed by slipping it over the button once on the doll.

Pockets (Make Two)

Using Colour H, CH 7. 

Row 1: SC in the 2^nd CH from the hook and each CH across. (6)

Rows 2 – 6: CH 1 and turn.  SC in each ST across. (6)

FO leaving a long tail for sewing. 

Use the tail to sew a pocket to each side of the front of the romper. Sew around three sides of the pocket, leaving the top edge open. Weave in ends.
