This striped crochet doll shirt is an easy pattern that looks great in a variety of different colors. Here you’ll find the written pattern (that’s free to follow along with on my blog) as well as a step-by-step video tutorial showing you how to make your own adorable striped crochet doll shirt.
This simple design requires basic crocheting skills as the entire project is done using single crochet stitches (aka double crochet stitches for those that use UK terminology) so it is accessible for beginners. This shirt is a quick project to whip up so if you’d like you can make multiple shirts in different colors to expand your doll’s wardrobe.
This striped crochet doll shirt pattern is Week 6 of the Amigurumi Advent Calendar CAL and is designed to fit my Advent Addy and Advent Adam dolls, however, this shirt could fit many of my other free amigurumi doll patterns as well.

This doll shirt slides onto the doll’s arms and is buttoned closed in the back of the shirt. This way, the little boy or little girl that receives this shirt doesn’t have to struggle with trying to get the top over the doll’s head.
A tip for crocheting this project. On rows 1 and 9, we create a ch-6 space that will eventually become button holes. When working in rows 2 and 10, when you get to the end of the row, do not work into the chain spaces.
When giving a small child a project with small parts like buttons on it, it is best to ensure that they have adult supervision as buttons can be a choking hazard for particularly small children.
One of the questions that I get often is “will this item fit an american girl doll”. The answer is, no. My doll clothes are designed to fit my doll designs and haven’t been tried or tested on an american girl doll. If you’re willing to experiment with using different yarn weights and gauges, you could possibly get it to fit but as it is written, it will not fit.
A note on gauge and yarn substitutions: if you’re not planning on matching the gauge given in the doll pattern and top, then I recommend using the same line of yarn throughout all the projects in the CAL (i.e. If you used red heart yarn in the supersaver line for your doll, use red heart super saver for all your clothes.
At minimum choose the same yarn weight (however this can still cause problems with gauge and fit as not all yarns in the same yarn weight category are equal) so, if you decided to use a dk weight yarn for your doll, then use that yarn weight for all your project

Special Stitches and Techniques:
- Invisible Finish / Join: FO leaving a long tail. Thread the tail onto a tapestry needle. Skip a stitch and place the tapestry needle through the top of the next stitch from front to back and pull through. Place tip of needle into top of the last ST worked under the back loop of the stitch and pull through to the back of the work. Weave in the end. Learn how to do this with my invisible finish/join tutorial.
- Single Crochet (SC) Join: With a slip knot already on the hook, insert hook into the designated stitch. YO and pull up a loop. YO and pull through both loops on the hook.
Finished Size:
- Doll is approximately 10.5” tall
Gauge:
- Clothing: 4 sts across x 6 rows = 1” square
Notes:
- These shoes are made to fit my Advent Adam Doll. Gauge is important for ensuring that all of the parts of your doll fit appropriately. If you don’t plan to match gauge, ensure that you maintain a consistent tension throughout each project. Using the same yarn line and hook throughout each project can also assist with minimizing gauge/tension changes.
- For a cleaner SCDEC on pieces worked in continuous rounds, do your SCDEC under the front loops only of each ST rather than under both loops. This is often referred to as an invisible decrease. Check out my invisible decrease tutorial on to see it done.
- For pieces worked in turned rows, use a normal SCDEC stitch instead of the invisible decrease.
- Color changes are done using the last YO of the previous stitch (except where otherwise indicated).
