The patterns vary in difficulty and use a variety of stitches.  Lori uses a 4 level difficulty system, rating patterns from Level 1 (easy) to Level 4 (advanced).  There is a visual index in the back of the book which I thought was a really cool addition showing you all the patterns, sorted by difficulty with an image of each project and its page number.

I found the patterns to be very clearly written and easy to understand. Photo tutorials are included with patterns that have more advanced stitches or require additional clarification.

Terminology

The patterns use terminology that is standard among tunisian crochet patterns like TKS for tunisian knit stitch and TSS for tunisian simple stitch.

As it uses a specialized technique, it has its own unique set of abbreviations separate from what is considered to be the standard US terminology.

You can find all of the abbreviations used in the book on page 56.

Supports for Makers

The first 54 pages of Exploring Tunisian crochet is a treasure trove of information.  It’s broken up into the following sections:

  • Getting Started
  • Basic Stitches
  • Basic Techniques
  • Venturing Beyond the Basic: Modified Stitches & Variations
  • Intermediate and Advanced Techniques
  • How to Read a Pattern

In these pages, you find step-by-step instructions for each stitch and technique and step-by-step photos that are clear and easy to understand.

While most instructions you’ll find for crochet are geared toward right-handed crocheters, Lori includes photos and instructions for left-handed makers as well.
