If you have a child in your life that loves to play dress-up with their dolls, then you know the importance of accessories. Giving a child a great hat to prepare their little friend for the cold weather makes a great gift. Both my kids have loved to play dress up with their dolls at different points and as soon as the weather got cold here, they insisted they needed the perfect hat to keep them warm in the winter too.

So this hat pattern was designed with those kids in mind. Because even a dolly needs a seasonal wardrobe change too.

How to Crochet an Ear Flap Hat For Dolls

This crochet hat pattern is worked from the top of the hat down to the bottom. The hat is crocheted in single crochet stitches so there aren’t any fancy stitches to know. After crocheting the body of the hat, we’ll create each ear flap separately. After the earflaps are created, we’ll move on to crocheting a trim and straps for our hat.

Tips for Crocheting An Ear Flap Hat for Amigurumi Dolls

  • When making crochet ear flap hats (or anything that has to fit something) matching gauge is important. IF you do not plan to match the gauge given in the pattern, make sure that you’re using the same yarn weight (ideally the same yarn brand and yarn line) and that your tension is consistent between the doll that you created and the hat pattern.

  • This little hat was designed from the top-down so that you can try your hat on your doll as you go. I recommend trying your hat on your doll after row 11 or 12 as you should be able to get a good idea at that point if the hat is going to fit.

  • If your hat does not fit, you’ll unfortunately, have to start over either with a looser tension or a larger crochet hook.

  • As with all crochet patterns take the time to read the pattern notes before you start to crochet so that you have all the information you need before getting started.

  • If you don’t like to change colors, omit the color changes and work the full hat in a single color.

Skill Level:

Supplies:

Abbreviations:

Special Stitches and Techniques:

  • Invisible Finish / Join: FO leaving a long tail. Thread the tail onto a tapestry needle.  Skip a stitch and place the tapestry needle through the top of the next stitch from front to back and pull through.  Place tip of needle into top of the last ST worked under the back loop of the stitch and pull through to the back of the work.  Weave in the end. Learn how to do this with my invisible finish/join tutorial.

  • Single Crochet (SC) Join: With a slip knot already on the hook, insert hook into the designated stitch. YO and pull up a loop.  YO and pull through both loops on the hook.

Finished Size:

  • Doll is approximately 10.5” tall

Gauge:

  • Clothing: 4 sts across x 6 rows = 1” square

Notes:

  • These shoes are made to fit my Advent Adam Doll. Gauge is important for ensuring that all of the parts of your doll fit appropriately.  If you don’t plan to match gauge, ensure that you maintain a consistent tension throughout each project.  Using the same yarn line and hook throughout each project can also assist with minimizing gauge/tension changes.

  • For a cleaner SCDEC on pieces worked in continuous rounds, do your SCDEC under the front loops only of each ST rather than under both loops.  This is often referred to as an invisible decrease.  Check out my invisible decrease tutorial on to see it done.

  • For pieces worked in turned rows, use a normal SCDEC stitch instead of the invisible decrease.

  • Color changes are done using the last YO of the previous stitch (except where otherwise indicated).
