What Are the Patterns Like To Work With?

I did run into issues with the pattern instructions. Many of the step-by-step instructions lacked clarity or missed key details. For example, some petal sections never mention that you need to fasten off and reattach your yarn before moving on to the next one. A few pattern notes also incorrectly referenced techniques that weren’t being used.

After digging deeper, I found an errata sheet on the David & Charles website confirming some of the errors I came across. CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE ERRATA SHEET. I recommend checking it out, printing it and keeping it with your book while you work.

The tutorial images included in the book are helpful, and I appreciate that each image is clearly labelled to match the step it belongs to. Some were a little tricky to see, either due to how far the camera was from the project or because a white background was used for projects using white yarn.  I wish this book included the “how to read patterns” section that David & Charles often provides in other patterns books as the writing style used here may feel confusing for many makers.

One section I loved: the Bouquet Ideas at the back of the book. It tells you exactly what you need to create several wonderful bouquets, giving you different bouquet idea suggestions and ready-to-follow recipes for beautifully lifelike blooms and endless combinations. I love this idea for special occasions and gifting.

What Crochet Terminology Is Used?

The book uses US crochet terminology, and you’ll find a US-to-UK conversion chart on page 7.

What Skill Level Do You Need?

Although the book doesn’t list skill levels, after reading (and rereading) many of the patterns, I can confidently say this book is suited for advanced crocheters only.

The amount of assumed knowledge is substantial. Combined with the gaps in explanations, unclear steps, and materials that require previous experience (like wire), this is not a book I would recommend to beginners.

If you’re skilled, patient, and comfortable problem-solving your way through patterns, you may enjoy the challenge of crocheting these handmade flowers. But if you’re new to crocheting, this won’t offer the support you need.

Supports Included for Makers (What’s Helpful, What’s Missing)

There is a brief tools and materials section on pages 6–7, along with a list of abbreviations.

The stitches and techniques section is placed at the back of the book with labelled illustrations, but several of the explanations lacked clarity and may still leave makers puzzled. This was especially noticeable because the book relies heavily on techniques like crocheting over floral wire, yet there is no section explaining how to do this, how to choose wire, or troubleshooting issues.

For makers who have never used floral wire before, you may find yourself turning to online tutorials for additional guidance.

Since the materials used in the book can be tricky to find for many North American readers (many folks in the United States and Canada aren’t used to a ply-system used for yarn weights and milk cotton is not commonly available). Some support on finding and using alternatives would have been a great added value piece to add to this book, which was not.

This list alone makes the book best for experienced makers who are comfortable working with non-traditional crochet materials.

Final Thoughts: Is Crochet a Flower Bouquet Worth It?

Crochet a Flower Bouquet is filled with inspiring and visually stunning designs. The finished blooms shown in the book are gorgeous, and the range of different flowers, different kinds of foliage, and themed bouquet projects will leave you dreaming up endless possibilities, from a simple wonderful gift to a stunning wedding bouquet.

But while the concepts and artistry are strong, the execution falls short for me. The unclear instructions, missing details, pattern errors, and overall lack of supportive teaching make this a challenging book. For that reason, I can only confidently recommend it to advanced crocheters who enjoy solving problems and don’t mind filling in the gaps themselves.

If you’re patient and excited about crafting beautiful, realistic flowers, this book may still be enjoyable. It truly is creative and inspiring. Just know that you’ll likely need additional resources — and a healthy dose of perseverance — to get the best results.
