What are the Patterns in Block-by-Block Blankets and Afghans Like?

Each pattern in Block-by-Block Blankets and Afghans provides written pattern instructions for the motif, a crochet stitch diagram for the motif, and a visual layout key, breaking down where individual motifs and colour changes are placed.

They also come with an easy to follow layout key which is great so if you find looking at the visual layout overwhelming, this is where you’ll find a breakdown of each motif variation and what colors are used for which rounds.

The written instructions are relatively clear and easy to follow however, that being said, I have experience with motifs and all of the stitches and techniques used.  The patterns assume a certain level of crochet knowledge, which might frustrate newer crocheters, but experienced makers shouldn’t run into too many issues.

There are some basic assembly instructions in terms of how to lay them out and how to join them but, this is very high level and could be confusing for some that are used to having more support.  Having some more support in terms of photo tutorials would have made this book more accessible to crocheters of all abilities.

Some patterns include diagrams that show different color variations that could be used for that design which is a handy, visual way to give you some color inspiration.

Blanket Sizes & Shapes

The blankets range from traditional rectangle shapes to more unique layouts, offering a variety of designs for colour fans and motif enthusiasts. The finished blankets range from 47” x 57” to 71” x 75”, offering generous sizes for cozy afghans.

Crochet Terminology

The patterns use US crochet terminology, with a handy US to UK conversion chart located on page 128. Another quick-reference conversion chart is thoughtfully included in the book’s fold-out flap, which doubles as a bookmark. This feature, along with hook and yarn weight conversion charts, makes navigating the book much easier, especially for international crocheters.

Skill Level

While the book doesn’t specify a skill level, I’d recommend it for intermediate to advanced crocheters. Makers should have experience with individual motifs and joining techniques, as the assembly instructions are high-level and lack step-by-step guidance. Beginners might find themselves searching for additional support online to tackle these patterns.

The patterns involve multiple color changes, resulting in a lot of ends to weave in. If weaving ends isn’t your favorite meditative practice, consider using self-striping yarn to simplify the process.

Supports Included for Makers in Block-by-Block Blankets and Afghans

Support resources are included in the book’s front matter, covering:

    •    The color wheel and Amanda’s use of colour (pages 8–9).

    •    A discussion of recommended yarns from both UK and global suppliers (page 11).

    •    Guidance for reading crochet charts (pages 16–17).

However, Block-by-Block Blankets and Afghans does not include stitch tutorials or detailed instructions for joining motifs. All supports are text-based, with no diagrams or photo tutorials, making it less beginner-friendly.

Supplies Needed

The projects predominantly use fingering weight yarn with a 3mm hook or DK weight yarn with a 4mm hook. You could substitute your favourite yarn weight however, adjustments may be needed for layout or size, especially if heavier yarn is used. If you make them as-is with a heavier. yarn weight, these blankets will be huge.

Where to Buy

Block-by-Block Blankets & Afghans is available for purchase through major retailers like Amazon, as well as local and online bookshops.

Overall

Block-by-Block Blankets & Afghans is a fun crochet book filled with beautiful, colourful designs that are sure to inspire crocheters who love working with motifs or are big color fans. The patterns are great for those looking to create large, colourful motif blankets and are a great choice for intermediate to advanced makers.

That said, beginners might find the lack of step-by-step tutorials and detailed joining instructions challenging. If you’re a newer crocheter, I’d recommend gaining experience with creating and assembling motifs before tackling these projects. However, for experienced crocheters, the creative layouts, vibrant colour combinations, and unique blanket designs make this book a wonderful resource for crafting heirloom-worthy pieces.
