Crochet Terminology
Patterns in this book are written in US crochet terminology. There is no US to UK conversion information available in the book. Abbreviations are conveniently listed at the beginning of each pattern with their matching chart symbols included with the abbreviations, though most of the patterns do not include crochet stitch diagrams.
Skill Level
With difficulty ratings indicated by bold “X”s under each pattern name. The X-based difficulty rating system could benefit from a brief explanation to help readers gauge the challenge level before starting a project.
The patterns cater primarily to those with an intermediate skill range or higher. All the designs use 4-ply sock yarn, which can be intimidating for novice crocheters due to the thinness of the yarn.
Those with experience with basic stitches wanting to tackle some of these projects will likely find the easy December Hat and the simple headband project the Double Twist Headband to be the easiest to start with before tackling projects with more complex stitches.
Supports Included for Makers in Crochet Hats and Mittens for Everyone
The book provides some maker supports, but they feel sparse:
- Chapter 3 offers high-level guidance on hat and mitten sizes and gauge but lacks detailed visuals or instructions on measuring for accuracy or in order to support makers unfamiliar or needing additional support in these areas.
- Chapter 4 includes a stitch guide with illustrations, though written instructions could be clearer. This section does not cover all the stitches used in the book with variations like increases and decreases not being covered at all.
- Chapter 5 contains small photo tutorials for crocheting thumbholes and thumbs but the images are small and a bit tricky to see. This would have been helpful to have with the thumbhole sections of the mittens patterns to save makers flipping back and forth.
- Chapter 7 shares bonus tips and variations like making cords to attach mittens, how to crochet simple bows, sew on labels, and make pom-poms, which are handy for personalizing projects.
Makers without prior experience may find themselves needing to search online for additional guidance, particularly if they aren’t already familiar with the stitches used.
Supplies Needed
Here’s what you’ll need for these projects, organized for convenience:
Yarn
All the patterns use a sock weight (1) yarn. Some of the yarns use are:
- Lana Grossa Meilenweit Tweed,
- Borgo de Pazzi Bice and,
- Durable Soqs.
Crochet Hook Sizes
The recommended hook size for all of the patterns in this book is G-6/ 4mm.
Accessories
- Stitch Markers,
- Tapestry Needle,
- Scissors,
- Measuring Tape.

Overall
This book is filled with beautiful, classic styles in sizes for the whole family. While the patterns are beautiful and suited for gift-giving needs, the limited maker supports and use of thin yarn make it more appropriate for crocheters with intermediate to advanced skills.
I’d recommend this book for intermediate to advanced level crocheters looking to have some patterns for hats and mittens in a variety of styles on hand for gifting. I’d recommend that beginners attempt multiple other crochet hat and mitten projects prior to attempting the patterns in this book unless they are willing to go online to find additional support.
