Yarnspirations has been launching a bunch of new yarn lines this fall and I keep finding new yarns from them at my local Michaels stores. On yet another recent trip to Michaels, I found Bernat Bounce Back yarn. This is a limited time yarn available in a limited run of colours but you just know I couldn’t resist picking one up. So today I’ll be sharing my review of Bernat Bounce Back yarn with you, showing you a crochet swatch done in the yarn and tell you my experience working with this new yarn line from Yarnspirations.

There are 8 colourways of Bernat Bounce Back available on the Michaels website but my local store had only 4 to choose from. I was able to resist the temptation to buy this yarn once but when I found the Frosted Blue colourway, it was a done deal. I knew I was taking it home to try. Like many of the other new yarn lines launching at Michaels, a single ball of Bernat Bounce Back cost me $11.99 Cdn plus tax. This yarn line is part of the Yarnpirations Stitch to Win contest that they run every Fall so it has been excluded from sales up to this point (but was eligible to have a coupon applied).

I was intrigued by the name of this yarn and it’s unique texture in the strand. At first, the strand appears to almost have a thread wrapped around a roving yarn but upon further inspection, I found that it is a 3-ply yarn (you can see me show and talk about this in my video review of this yarn). I didn’t know what exactly made this yarn unique/what was behind the name of the yarn so I did some searching online and the only thing that I could find was this blurb on the Michaels website:

“Bounce into softness with Bernat Bounce Back yarn! This light and springy yarn has all the warmth and all the cozy softness without the heaviness. The bouncy new texture brings a lightness to home décor projects of all kinds. From afghans to pillows, the bulky weight of Bounce Back stitches up quickly and it’s machine washable for easy breezy care“. – Michaels.ca website

I will say that the yarn does feel a bit lighter than what I would expect of a bulky weight yarn but even after swatching, I still don’t understand the name Bounce Back. To me, the name insinuates that it fluffs up or bounces back somehow. But I don’t know. I think it has something to do with how it’s plied but there as no discernable factors that jumped out at me that explained it.

I did a crochet swatch with Bernat Bounce Back and as usual, I started with single crochets, worked into half doubles and then double crochets. just to take it a bit further, I did a small section of thicket stitch, followed by a section of herringbone half double crochet slip stitch. I found the yarn to be quite delightful to work with. It was lovely and soft and I experienced no splitting or issues while working with it. There was a small knoted join I came across about 3/4 of the way through my swatch but that wasn’t a big deal.

The stitch definition is softer than I expected but still decent as you can still identify each stitch, they just look softer. I loved the way it looked specifically in the thicket stitch section as it has this soft, beautiful texture that I fell in love with. I have plans to share a crochet project here and on the youtube channel that will utilize the one ball of Bernat Bounce Back soon.

How do you feel about the new Bernat Bounce Back yarn? Have you tried it yet? If so, what was your experience? I’d love to hear what you thought as well as what you have made with it.

  1. Hi: I was wondering if you know of any substitute for the Bernat Bounce Back yarn.
Micheal’s does not have many balls left and I would like to crochet a pattern with a similar yarn. Your response is much appreciated.

    • Hi Diane,
Off the top of my head, I can’t think of any yarns that have all the same characteristics as the Bernat Bounce Back. Caron Chunky Cakes and Tea Cakes are the closest yarn that I can think of that would get close in gauge and also be made of acrylic. Bounce Back has a gauge of 11sts x 12 rows = 4″. The Caron and Tea Cakes have a gauge of 11sts x 14 rows = 4″. The ply on the tea and chunky cakes are smoother so you won’t get the same texture as with the Bernat Bounce Back. Unfortunately, I can’t think of a similar yarn available in solid colours. I hope this helps.
