Crochet gnomes seem to be everywhere right now and the appeal is clear. They’re cute, whimsical and there’s just so many fun things you can do with them. Last fall, I launched my first crochet gnome pattern for a crochet gnome ornament and it was a big hit. People have been using that pattern to make gnomes all year long and not just for Christmas. Once of the requests I have been getting frequently is for different seasonal gnome ornaments and this week I’m here to deliver. This week’s free pattern is a crochet witch gnome ornament. I’ve used a pom pom base as I did with my previous gnome ornament pattern but have created a new witch hat for it. These Crochet Witch Gnome Ornaments are quick and easy to make, accessible for beginners and make great gifts.

To make a crochet with gnome ornament, you’ll need a worsted weight yarn in two different colours. I used Brava Minis for this project as they are the perfect size for this. You can also use just the regular Brava Worsted Weight yarn for this if you plan to make more than one. I used the colours caution and black for my witch gnome ornament but have fun mixing and matching to suit your preferences.

The assembly for this project is done in the same manner as my Crochet Gnome Christmas Tree Ornament Free Pattern and I have a video that walks you through this (which I’ll include below). To secure your witch hat to your gnome, you’ll need a hot glue gun, a scrap piece of yarn, polyfill and a wooden bead. The wooden bead is secured to the pompom with the scrap piece of yarn and then the hat is stuffed with the polyfill. You’ll then use the hot glue gun to either add glue to the inside of the hat or around the pom pom and over the top of the bead. Be careful not to burn yourself during this step. Then the hat is placed over the top of the pom pom and slightly over the bead and held in place until the glue is cool.

Special Techniques:

  • Invisible Finish: FO leaving a tail that is at least 5 – 6 inches in length.  Thread the tail onto a tapestry needle.  Place the tapestry needle through the top of the 2nd ST from front to back and pull through.  Place tip of needle into top of the last ST of the round, under the back loop of the stitch, and pull through to the back of the work.  Weave in the end.  Find my tutorial HERE or watch the video below.

Finished Size:

  • Approximately 5” tall, assembled.

Gauge:

  • 12 sts x 12 rows = 2 inches

NOTES:

  • Gauge is not vital to the project but it may affect the amount of yarn needed for the project or result in your hat not fitting your pompom correctly.
  • This pattern is worked in continuous rounds (unless stated otherwise).  Do not join at the end of the row, unless indicated.  A stitch marker is used to keep track of the beginning of the round.
  • For a cleaner SCDEC, do your SCDEC under the front loops only of each stitch rather than under both loops.  This is often referred to as an invisible decrease. Find a tutorial HERE.

Creating the Hanger

Cut a length of yarn that matches your hat colour to approximately 8 – 10” long.  Thread the tail onto a tapestry needle and pull the yarn through a stitch near the top of the hat.  Do NOT pull it all the way through.  Thread it through another stitch at the top of the hat and pull it inside the hat.  Take the two ends of your yarn and tie a knot inside the hat, making sure that you leave enough yarn outside of the hat to hang it on the tree. Pull the loop up to finish the hanger.

Assembly:

Use a scrap piece of yarn and thread it through your bead.  Tie the yarn to the elastic on your pompom so the bead hangs slightly against the top/side of the pompom.

Use an elastic to wrap around the pompom to hold the fur down to make adding glue easier and less messy.  Stuff your hat with stuffing and place over top of your pompom to test the placement of your bead.  When satisfied add hot glue around the top of the pompom where the edge of your hat will meet/touch the pompom, making sure to add some to the top of the bead.  Place stuffed hat on top of the pompom and hold in place until glue cools/hat is secure. See a video on how I assemble my pom pom gnomes HERE.
