Into the Sunset Crochet Mittens Pattern: Free Crochet Pattern

The cold weather is upon us and this week, I’m going to share how to crochet a pair of quick and easy crochet mittens with my Into the Sunset Mittens free crochet pattern. These crochet mittens use basic crochet stitches and are accessible to beginner crocheters.

I love these mittens for a couple of reasons.

1. I am obsessed with the colours. They remind me of beautiful sunsets and this comfy old retro t-shirt that I wore until just threads remained of it. They just make me feel nostalgic.

2. I can still grab things and hold onto to them without feeling like I’m going to drop everything (like I do with bulkier mittens). Yay for being functional and beautiful!

3. They are the perfect pair of mittens for keeping in my purse or pockets without being super bulky. I hate having my pockets or purse bulging with stuff I am carrying around. It makes me more likely to lose a mitten and feeling just generally annoyed at the extra bulk.

I also love the simplicity of this design for creating a relaxing experience. I know many crocheters that tense up or shy away from using fingering weight yarn because they think it’s going to be tedious and take F-O-R-E-V-E-R. But because the stitches and colour changes are simple, they really don’t take long to make at all. I made these in an afternoon so you can totally do it!

Although these crochet mittens are crocheted using basic stitches, they prove that making basic crochet mittens doesn’t have to look basic. Using a tonal yarn like the Stroll Tonal that I used, gives these mittens life and dynamic. Throw in some colour-blocking and you just gave a basic crochet mitten a whole lot of personality. I encourage you to get creative with your colour choices and really make something that screams you.

If you are like me and have a few skeins/hanks of fingering weight yarn laying around from impulse purchases (you know EXACTLY which ones I’m talking about) that you haven’t used, this pattern is a great way to use them up. When crocheted to gauge, you should be able to get 2 pairs of mittens from a 460 yard hank/skein of fingering weight yarn.

Are Crochet Mittens Hard?

Crochet mittens are actually really easy. Just like anything new, it can seem intimidating at first but once you give them a shot, you’ll realize just how easy they are to make. This pair of mittens is made using a fingering weight yarn but if the thought of using fingering weight yarn freaks you out, check out my Norse Crochet Mittens free pattern which shows you how to crochet chunky mittens using a size (5) bulky weight yarn.

I’m A Beginner. Can I Crochet These Mittens?

Absolutely! You need to know a few basic techniques in order to crochet these mittens but I have tutorials for most of them here on my blog. You’ll need to know how to do the Magic Circle, Double Crochet, Half Double Crochet, Half Double Crochet Decrease, Front Post Double Crochet and Back Post Double Crochet. If you aren’t comfortable with changing colours yet, then try crocheting these mittens in a single colour first.

What Yarn Should I Use for My Mittens?

For my Into the Sunset Crochet Mittens, I used WeCrochet’s Stroll Tonal Mini Packs (Check out my review of Stroll Mini Packs). This is a fingering weight (1) yarn pack that comes with 5 mini skeins in different colours (Check them out on the WeCrochet Website). I used the Sunset Colour Pack because I just loved the colours together and as soon as I saw them, I knew I’d use them to make mittens. If you don’t want to use the Mini Packs, here are some other great yarns from WeCrochet that would make good substitutes:

• Stroll – a good solid-coloured yarn from the same yarn line. Also available in tweed.

How to Crochet Mittens With This Free Crochet Pattern

My favourite way to crochet mittens is from the top-down. Meaning that we are going to start crocheting the part of the mitten that fits over your fingers and work down towards your wrist. Then we will attach the yarn to add the thumb. This is my favourite way to crochet mittens because you can try them on as you work to see if you may need to add (or subtract) rounds in order to ensure that your mittens fit you perfectly. See the Notes section of the pattern for more.

These mittens are designed using a basic crochet stitch so that it is accessible for beginners but also a relaxing crochet project for more advanced crocheters as well. Whether you choose to crochet these mittens in a single colour, add more stripes or use, different funky colours, this crochet mitten pattern is a great project for experimenting with colour and making something unique for you.

Unlike my Norse Crochet Mittens where both mittens are made the same way, there is a left hand and right handed mitten for this pattern. This was done in order to keep the slip stitch seams on the palms of your hands and the best-looking part of your mittens facing up.

How Can I Customize These Mittens to Fit Me Better?

As I already touched upon above, this free crochet mittens pattern is crocheted from the top-down so that you can try them on as you work. In the notes section of this pattern, I have included the ideal places to adjust the length of the body of the mitten and the thumb. This way, if you have longer or shorter fingers than I do, then you’ll be able to adjust this pattern to get the perfect fit for you.

FO leaving a long tail.  Use the tail to weave through the FLO of the last round and cinch hole shut.  (This technique is the called the ultimate finish. Check out my ultimate finish tutorial if you need a little extra help here. The instructions are written for amigurumi but the techique is the same.) Weave in ends.
