Free Crochet Twisted Headband Pattern & Video Tutorial

The Textured Twist Crochet headband is a beautiful twisted headband that is made with basic crochet stitches.  In this blog post, you’ll find the written pattern to create this crochet headband in sizes for the whole family, instructional photos to show you how to create that beautiful twist, as well as a step-by-step video tutorial.

I love making crochet headbands because they are a quick project that you can use daily and they are perfect gifts, especially when you’re needing a gift last-minute.   This project is made from a simple rectangle and has a single seam which we do when we create our beautiful twist at the front of the headband.

What Sizes Does This Crochet Headband Pattern Come In?

I’ve made this pattern available in 8 different sizes for your convenience so that you can make this headband for anyone.  The sizes are:

  • Baby (0-3M)
  • Baby (6 – 12M)
  • Toddler (1 – 3Y)
  • Child Size/Teen Size
  • Adult Small
  • Adult Medium
  • Adult Large

The pattern is split into two different sizing groups to make the pattern easier to read so make sure to take a look at the Notes Section of this pattern to help you out with reading that if you need assistance.

What Yarn Does this Crochet Headband Pattern Use?

I used an absolutely gorgeous hand dyed yarn for this project from Wonderland Yarns.  The lovely folks at Frajous Fibers/Wonderland Yarns generously provided the yarn for this project so that I could bring you this free pattern.

I used the Wonderland Yarns Lory Base which is a 100% superwash merino wool yarn.  It’s a DK weight yarn and each hank comes with 280 yards / 256 meters of yarn.  This project really pops when you use two different colors and you won’t need a ton of yarn to make one. After making a headband with this yarn, you’ll have lots of leftover yarn to make more headbands or another project!

I really loved working with this yarn.  The colors are dreamy, it’s soft and just an absolute delight to work with.  If you haven’t tried their yarns before and you have the budget to treat yourself to some hand dyed yarn, I definitely recommend checking them out.  You can find their yarn on the Wonderland Yarns / Frabjous Fibers Website.

What if I Want to Use a Different Yarn To Make This Crochet Twisted Headband Pattern?

Feel free to use whatever yarn you prefer for this pattern.  I have included written gauge swatch instructions to make it easier for you to check to see if your have matched gauge / can match gauge with your yarn selection. So if all you’ve got on hand is acrylic yarn in a DK weight or something else you prefer to use, you have all the tools to do that.

I’ve also included the resizing information so if your gauge is a little bit off or you prefer to work to measurements you have the ability to do that with this pattern as well.

NOTES:

  • Gauge is vital to the project to ensure that it is the right size.   Not matching gauge not only affects the size of your finished project but how much yarn is used as well.

  • A 5 mm hook is the suggested crochet hook size for this pattern but you may need to adjust your hook size up or down in order to match the gauge given in this pattern.

  • This pattern is worked in turned rows.  Placing a stitch marker in the first and/or last stitch of the row can help prevent losing or picking up extra stitches. I recommend placing a stitch marker in the 2nd CH of the CH 3s so you know where to work your stitches in later rows.

  • Reading the Pattern: This pattern is split into two main sizing groups: Baby Sizes and then Toddler through Adult. The headings for each pattern group show how the pattern is written.  Where it says Baby 0 – 3M, (Baby 3 – 6M, Baby 6 – 12M) this means the pattern is written in the 0 – 3M size with changes for each size following in parentheses (), (Baby 3 – 6M, Baby 6 – 12M).
    • The same formatting applies to the second set of sizes.  The stitch count in parenthesis at the end of each row follow the same order. I recommend using a pen or highlighter to circle or highlight the size you are planning to crochet before using the pattern.

  • When working into unworked stitches under chain spaces, insert your hook from the front of the work, pushing the previous row back and out of the way to ensure you’re working only under both loops of the indicated stitch, not around the chain space itself. Skip the stitch directly behind the one you just created.

  • Color changes are done using the last yarn over of the last stitch before the color change is indicated. To weave in less ends carry the colors up the side of the piece. To do this, do not fasten off each color when you make the change. Simply drop the color when not in use and pick it back up when you need it again, carrying it up the side of the piece.  Be careful not to pull the yarn too tightly when picking it back up.  The carried yarn will be hidden when the headband is joined.

  • To adjust the length/circumference of the pattern: Create a beginning chain of an even number and work to the measurements in the size chart.
