About the Author

Julia Madill is a talented Canadian crochet and knit pattern designer, tech editor, and graphic artist. Known for her innovative approach and eye for detail, Julia has poured her years of expertise into this book to provide crocheters with a comprehensive and in-depth exploration of familiar granny stitch shapes (and plenty of new ones) for creating their own original granny-gorgeous designs.

Patterns Included in Every Way with Granny Crochet

Every Way with Granny Crochet features 50 unique shapes created using the iconic granny stitch. From stars and hearts to rainbows and diamonds, this bounty of geometric shapes sparks inspiration for any project. Each granny pattern includes a full written form, visual charts / stitch diagrams, and detailed modification instructions to adjust the size of the shape.

I loved the “The Stats” boxes accompanying each pattern. These offer invaluable information on the growth potential of each shape, the direction it’s worked, and what shapes it pairs well with. This makes it quick for anyone looking to mix and match shapes for to create epic afghans, patchwork crochet projects, or even tiny ornaments.

Crochet Terminology

The book uses US crochet terminology, with abbreviations conveniently located on page 10. However, there’s no US-to-UK conversion chart included.

Skill Level

Although skill levels aren’t explicitly mentioned, I’d say that the patterns range from easy to intermediate skill levels. Some shapes are easier than others, providing a good range for you to practice and build your skill set.

Supports Included for Makers

This book goes beyond motif patterns, offering a robust support system for makers. I loved the level of support included in this book! Supports include:

  •     Stitch Tutorials: Instructions are clear and accompanied by ilustrations. The illustrations are numbered so you know which written step goes with each illustration which is great.

  •     Pattern Reading Tips: There is a brief but handy explanation of repeats/pattern reading instructions on page 10 though it isn’t labelled so be sure not to miss it.

  •     Gauge Tips: There is a fantastic explanation of gauge on pages 14 – 15 that I love is included, despite this being a stitch dictionary.

  •    Right vs. Wrong Side: A section on the right side vs. the wrong side of the granny which is fantastic for beginners and visual learners.

  •   Reading Crochet Diagrams: Pages 18 – 19 cover how to read crochet diagrams which is incredibly handy, includes s symbol key and may be just what those nervous about reading charts need to get past the fear and start using basic charts.

  •    Changing & Use of Colors: Pages 20 – 21 cover the Use of colors and how to change colors, though the instructions for how to change colors are high level.

  •    Finishing Section: Here you’ll find a detailed set of instructions on different blocking techniques (which is fantastic – seriously LOVE that she did this), different seaming methods to join your granny shapes and different simple crochet borders to use. All to ensure you have the perfect finishing touch for your project.

The book even includes a showcase sampler blanket pattern featuring 15 granny shapes. So if you’re sick of the basic granny look and want to mix things up, you have a great starting point here.

Overall

This is an incredibly well thought out, invaluable resource that is jam-packed with supports and potential for makers of different skill levels.  If you’re into motifs or want to play with granny stitch to make some fun, fab shapes, this book is a must-have on your craft bookshelf. Historically, I haven’t been the biggest fan of granny patterns (sorry, Julia!), but this book completely won me over. It’s a graphic-granny showstopper I can’t wait to dive into further.
