I’m not sure when exactly it happened but sometime last year, mug mats or mug rugs became a really popular project to make. If you haven’t heard of them or aren’t sure what a mug mat is, it’s essentially a fancy coaster for your mug. As the title suggests, there are 12 different mug mat crochet patterns included in the book. Those patterns are:

  • Honeybee Mug Mat
  • Tree & Candy Stripes Mug Mat
  • Trio of Trees Mug Mat
  • Sheep Mug Mat
  • Piggy Mug Mat
  • Pumpkin Truck Mug Mat
  • Pair of White Cats Mug Mat
  • Hen Mug Mat
  • Rooster Mug Mat
  • Coffee Cups Mug Mat
  • Hearts Mug Mat
  • Dragonfly Mug Mat

The crochet mug mats in Farmhouse Mug Mats are all geared towards a farmhouse aesthetic and they are beautiful. Almost too beautiful to put a mug on because you just want to look at them. Honestly, with all the work that would go into creating one of these masterpieces, my heart would break if I spilled coffee on it. That won’t stop me from making them though because they are just too beautiful and fun to make. They would make fantastic gifts too. I know a few people on my list that will likely get a couple of these soon. Housewarming gift anyone?

Each mug mat pattern comes with a colour chart to help you know where to make those colour changes to create the beautiful images on the the mug mat. The patterns all utilize a DK weight acrylic/cotton blend yarn from Sheepjes so you’ll have to shop online or at your local yarn store (not Michaels) to find this yarn if you’re wanting to use what the designer used.

All the patterns in Farmhouse Mug Mats are graded as intermediate level and I completely agree with that assessment. There is a lot of colourwork involved in these crochet mug mat patterns and although they use relatively simple stitches, the colour work could be tricky for beginners. There are no additional resources in the back of the book for those new to tapestry crochet so I’d recommend this book to those that are already experienced with tapestry crochet techniques or those that are willing to figure it out as you go. The patterns themselves were clear to get the point across but if I was new to tapestry crochet or colourwork I could get frustrated without having some extra help.

Overall, Farmhouse Mug Mats is a book full of beautiful and fun colourwork projects for intermediate crocheters. If you’re looking for some great mug mat patterns that take the concept of mug mats to the next level, then you’ll likely want to check out Farmhouse Mug Mats on Amazon.

  1. Ashley, thanks for the review and a chance to win this lovely booklet! What is the finished size of each mat? Any info in the booklet? Thanks.

    • They vary in size but on average they are 10.25″ wide x 6″ long.

      I hope this helps 🙂

      • Yes, Ashley, it does help! Thanks a lot! I have a a ton of cotton yarn in worsted weight and was planning on using it instead of DK weight for those mats. Means they will come out larger and would work as place mats.
