Crochet dishcloths and dish towels make perfect gifts and are also a great way to add a touch of crochet to your kitchen decor. I designed this free crochet dish towel pattern to have a matching dishcloth to make a set that is a quick project to whip up in order to give as a gift (but let’s be honest, you’ll probably want a set for yourself too). This dish towel crochet pattern is made with simple stitches and is accessible for advanced beginners.

For this design, I used WeCrochet’s dishie yarn, which is a worsted weight cotton yarn that comes in a huge variety of bright colors. Dishie is my absolute favorite cotton yarn and is my go-to cotton yarn for any of my projects needing a cotton yarn not just because it comes in so many different shades and it’s machine washable, but because it’s just fabulous to crochet with.
When I started this crochet towel pattern, I decided that I wanted a hanging hand towel type of design rather than just a crochet towel topper. I have some tea towels in my kitchen that have the toppers attached to them but I just don’t love them. So I set out to create a no-sew crochet tea towel that didn’t require me to have a pre-made towel.
How Is The Ava Free Crochet Dish Towel Pattern Made?
This lovely crochet towel is made from the bottom-up using a variation of double crochet stitches called the herringbone double crochet. This stitch gives a great texture to our crochet towels and also provides a really nice drape. I’ve also added a pop of color near the bottom of the hanging towel and spaced throughout the dishcloth using some crossed stitches.
Make sure that you check out the Special Stitches section to learn how to do the special stitches used in the project. As I mentioned, they are just variations of basic stitches so if you know how to do the single crochet and double crochet stitches, this project is absolutely accessible for you.

After I finished making and designing this crochet kitchen towel pattern, I decided that we needed a dishcloth pattern to match so that you could gift the two as a set. One of the best things about this design is how easy it is to customize. They look great in either the stripes like you see in my own towels (pictured), or as a solid color. Because they are so easy to make and customize, they make wonderful gifts no matter the time of year.

- Color A: Inlet (1 ball – 1 for kitchen towel & 1 for dishcloth)
- Color B: Swan (1 ball for both)
- Tapestry Needle / Yarn Needle
- 1 ½” Button
- Sewing Needle and Thread

Abbreviations:
- CH(s) = Chain(s)
- DC = Double Crochet
- FO = Finish Off
- HBDC = Herringbone Double Crochet (see Special Stitches)
- RS = Right Side
- SC = Single Crochet
- SK = Skip
- SL ST = Slip Stitch
- SP = Space
- ST = Stitch
- WS = Wrong Side
- XDC = Crossed Double Crochet (see Special Stitches)
- YO = Yarn Over
Special Stitches:
- Herringbone Double Crochet (HBDC): YO, insert hook into designated stitch. YO and pull up a loop and pull loop through first loop on hook. YO and pull through first loop on hook. YO and pull through both remaining loops.
- Crossed Double Crochet (XDC): SK 1st ST and DC into the next stitch. Working behind the DC you just completed DC in the skipped stitch.
Finished Size:
- Dish Towel: Approx. 10.5” wide x 20” tall
Gauge:
- 13 sts x 10 rows = 4”
Notes:
- Gauge is not vital to the project but it may affect how much yarn is needed and the size of your project.
- This pattern is worked back and forth in turned rows.
- CH 2 at the beginning of a row counts as the first ST. Do not work into the first stitch of rows that start with CH 2.
- Color changes are executed using the last YO of the last ST of the previous row.
- Make either project a single color by omitting the color changes.

Ava Free Crochet Dish Towel Pattern
Using Color A, CH 35.
Row 1 (RS): HBDC in the 3rd CH from the hook (skipped 2 CHs count as 1st st), HBDC in each remaining CH across. (34)
Row 2 (WS): CH 2 and turn. HBDC in each ST across.
Rows 3 – 4: CH 2 and turn. HBDC in each ST across.
Change to Color B.
Row 5: CH 1 and turn. SC in each ST across.
Row 6: CH 2 and turn. XDC across until 1 ST remains. DC in last ST.
Row 7: CH 1 and turn. SC in each ST across.
Change to Color A.
Rows 8 – 10: Repeat Row 2.
Change to Color B.
Rows 11 – 13: Rep Rows 5 – 7.
Change to Color A.
Rows 14 – 45: Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 19” long.
Row 46: CH 2 and turn. HBDC 28, CH 2, SK 2, HBDC 3. (31 sts and 1 CH-2 SP)
Rows 47 – 48: Repeat Row 2.
FO and weave in ends. Use sewing needle and thread to sew button to the RS of the fabric in the top-left corner (the corner opposite to the buttonhole).
How to hang your dish towel:
With RS facing you, drape the top of dish towel (the part with the button and buttonhole) over the handle on the oven door.
Bring the corners with the button and buttonhole around to the front of the towel and secure the button through the buttonhole over top of the towel.
