Creating This Project for The Last-Minute Crafter
This entire blanket is made with easy crochet stitches and has a simple repeat making it a great option for crocheting while binge-watching your favourite show or movie.
I named this blanket the Eleventh Hour blanket because I designed it because I neede a last-minute Christmas gift for someone. I didn’t have a lot of time so I knew I’d need a large hook and some jumbo or bulky yarn to make a big blanket fast.
In all honesty, I had kind of forgotten that I need to make this gift and when my husband reminded me, it was a mad dash to get it done. I made my whole blanket in a matter of 2 – 2.5 hours.
I know I’m not the only person during the holiday season that finds themselves in this scenario so I figured this would be a great project to share with you in case you find yourself in a similar situation.
Tips For Crocheting This Blanket
- When adding a new color to your blanket, the color changes will always happen at the end of the row, using the last yarn over of the stitch.
- Make sure that you leave a long tail that you can weave in when you do this as Bernat Blanket Extra yarn (which is a chenille yarn) has a tendency to unravel sometimes.
- If you don’t want to have to weave in your ends, you can make this blanket in a solid color.
How Many Balls of Bernat Blanket Extra Yarn Do I Need for a Blanket?
This Bernat Blanket Extra blanket pattern uses 5 skeins of yarn – 3 skeins of the main color (in this pattern, Smoky Green) and 2 skeins of the accent color (for this pattern, white – use your favorite colors to match your decor).
Each ball of Bernat Blanket Extra yarn contains 97 yards / 87 meters. If you’re crocheting this project to gauge and exactly as written, you will have a small amount of yarn left over.
Gauge is optional for this chunky throw blanket however, it will affect how much yarn you use so keep that in mind.

what was the reason for the hook size, when a 8mm is suggested on the packaging?
This pattern uses Bernat Blanket Extra and the recommended hook size on the label is a 15mm hook. Usually if you see a hook size used that is different than on the packaging, it is a design choice to get what a designer is looking for from the fabric (i.e. more drape, lacier, tighter).
What are the dimensions on this?
Approximately 32” wide x 50” long
I have been reading over this gorgeous blanket pattern and would like to try it! Can you clarify if the last color change is truly 6 rows? It just seems odd as all the rest are 2 or 4 rows of each color.
Thanks so much for your time!
Hi Lynn,
The first set of rows in Colour A is 6 rows and the last colour change is also 6 rows to match the first set.
