This week I’m sharing my very first crochet blanket square free pattern. I was invited to participate in the 2021 Afghan Crochet Along with The Unraveled Mitten and I jumped at the chance to design my first crochet blanket square – The Lavender Fields Crochet Blanket Square.

Pin this for Later Save It

The Lavender Fields Crochet Blanket Square is an intermediate level crochet pattern that features a ombre-effect using 4 different solid-coloured shades and a coordinating speckle yarn. I used Brava Worsted Weight yarn and Brava Speckle yarn for my crochet blanket square. I used the colours Mulberry, Lady Slipper, Plummy Speckle and Freesia. Try mixing and matching your own colours to create your own ombre effect or completely mix it up to create a whole new look. Check out all the colours of WeCrochet Brava and Brava Speckle here.

Skill Level:

  • Intermediate

Terminology:

  • U.S. Terminology

Supplies:

Abbreviations:

Special Stitches/Techniques:

  • DC Cluster: YO, insert hook into ST, YO, pull up a loop, YO and pull through first two loops on hook, [YO, insert hook into same ST, YO, pull up a loop, YO and pull through first two loops on hook] twice, with 4 loops on hook, YO and pull through all loops on hook.

  • Invisible Finish/Join: FO leaving a long tail. Thread the tail onto a tapestry needle.  Place the tapestry needle through the top of the 2nd ST from front to back and pull through.  Place tip of needle into top of the last ST of the round, under the back loop of the stitch, and pull through to the back of the work.  Weave in the end. Find a tutorial for how to do the Invisible Finish/Join here.

Finished Size:

  • 12” tall x 12” wide

Gauge:

  • Motif measures 5.75” at the end of Row 7. Square measures 12” square after completion of Row 17.

NOTES:

  • CH-3 counts as the first DC of the round.

  • This project is worked in joined rounds.  Do NOT turn at the end of each row.

  • Invisible joins are used to create a cleaner join at the end of specified rows.  A SL ST can be used if that is your preference, but it will create a more obvious join.

  • Gauge is vital to ensure you get a 12” square, take time to check your gauge.
