I am so excited to share with you this week’s free crochet pattern for my Pawsitively Cozy Crochet Cat Bed! This project makes a round, simple crochet cat bed, using simple stitches and basic shaping techniques. It’s big enough that it can be used for cats or smaller dogs. Best of all, this crochet cat bed pattern has been designed to minimize sewing and only has one seam. Are you ready to learn how to crochet a cat bed yet? Let’s talk about what materials we’ll need and some tips before we get started.

The Pawsitively Crochet Cat Bed Pattern is crocheted using Fable Fur yarn from WeCrochet (crochet.com). Our cat Bacon, fancies herself to be royalty so I knew that I had to make her pet bed more luxurious than a standard bed so I opted to use Fable Fur to give it a bit of luxury. Plus, it makes it so fluffy and cozy, it’s irresistable. I’ve opted to pair a large crochet hook with this yarn to make sure this project works up quickly and so it is super easy to feel your stitches as you work. If this is your first time working with fur yarn, then check out my Tip and Tricks for Working with Faux Fur Yarn post for my top tips and tricks to help you hit the ground running.

This project also uses some high density foam to help give this simple crochet cat bed some structure. It doesn’t require a lot of it and I was able to get a piece for $12 at our local foam/furniture recovering store. High density foam is firmer than regular crafting foam and will give you more structure and stronger walls for your crochet cat bed. The price difference between the craft foam and the high density foam was only a couple of dollars here and it made a HUGE difference and is definitely worth the splurge for this.

The Pawsitively Cozy Crochet Cat Bed Pattern creates a pet bed that measures approximately 20″ across, 8.5″ tall and 61.5″ around. It’s a decently sized bed and should fit most cats or even smaller dogs like chihuahuas or shih tzus.

Terminology:

  • U.S. Terminology

Supplies:

Abbreviations:

  • CH = Chain
  • FO = Finish Off
  • MC = Magic Circle
  • SC = Single Crochet
  • SCDEC = Single Crochet Decrease / Single Crochet Two Stitches Together
  • SCINC = Single Crochet Increase / 2 Single Crochet Stitches in the Same Stitch
  • SL ST = Slip Stitch
  • ST = Stitch
  • WS = Wrong Side

Finished Size:

  • Approximately 8.5” tall x 20” wide across x 61.5” around

Gauge:

  • Rounds 1 – 4 = 4” across

Notes:

  • Gauge is not vital to the project, but it may affect the amount of yarn and foam needed for the project.
  • Adhesives: I used a hot glue gun and hot glue to glue the ends of my foam together, however I recommend testing any adhesive that you use on a part of the foam first to ensure it doesn’t melt or damage your foam.
  • A 10mm crochet hook is recommended for the project but if you find you are unable to feel your stitches, you can adjust your hook until you can more easily feel your stitches to more easily know where to place your stitches.  This may however affect your gauge and therefore, the amount of yarn and foam needed.
  • This pattern is worked in continuous rounds (unless stated otherwise).  Do not join at the end of the row, unless indicated.  A stitch marker is used to keep track of the beginning of the round.
  • All pieces made in the Fable Fur are worked and sewn onto the project with the wrong side facing out to show the better-looking side of the fur.

Rounds 19 – 48 should measure approximately 14” tall at this point. Place project on a flat surface and insert the foam around the base and fold the fabric over the foam. If you flip your piece over, the cushion top should line up with the edge of the foam so that a small indent around the cushion is formed. If ends of foam overlaps, trim the end until pieces touch and it fits snuggly. Optional: Secure the ends of the foam together with glue/adhesive (see notes).
