My kids (and husband) all went crazy as soon as this book was delivered and I haven’t heard the end of the pestering since as they have all placed “orders” for their favourite Pokemon to be crocheted. I’ve only got so many hands and so many hours in the day, kids! Anyways, as stated above, Pokémon Crochet contains 20 amigurumi patterns for Pokémon. The Pokémon patterns contained in Pokemon Crochet are:
- Gengar
- Jigglypuff
- Wobbuffet
- Snorlax
- Pichu
- Charmander
- Dragonite
- Evee
- Flareon
- Mewoth
- Pikachu
- Psyduck
- Squirtle
- Bulbasaur
- Charizard
- Lapras
- Magikarp
- Vaporeon
- Vulpix
The patterns are broken down into three catagories: Beginner, Easy and Intermediate. The patterns are all written in the U.S. terminology and a resource section is included in the front of the book. The resource section includes instructions for all your basic instructions with illustrations for each stitch included. There is even a section about how to properly close up your amigurumi project and I was happy to see that included but feel like it is missing a step and someone new to crocheting amigurumi may find themselve in a bit of a pickle if they leave off the way the instructions advise you to. It’s just one missing step and seasoned amigurumi makers will know what to do but a newer person may find that problematic. Find a tutorial on doing the ultimate finish HERE on my blog.
The patterns for the Pokémon themselves are straightforward, once you get used to the author’s unique style. I personally found it took me a bit to figure out what was trying to be conveyed at a few points so make sure you’re reading the patterns through before you start to crochet so you can figure out any problem areas before you get there. Also, make sure to check out the “How to read patterns” section on page 8 of the Pokémon Crochet book which may help but even after reading, there were still sections that could be problematic for those not familiar with this writing style. Sizes for each finished Pokémon are given but there is no mention of gauge in the book that I could find so unfortunately, it don’t be surprised if your Pokémon turns out to be a different size than given.
A lot of the facial details and other additions like spots are created out of felt and glued onto the Pokémon and not crocheted. Templates are given in the book for the pieces you’ll need to cut out. The amount of felt used varies from Pokémon to Pokémon.
The projects are all beautiful and perfectly resembles their TV counterparts. If you have a Pokémon fan in your life, this book can definitely keep your hooks busy for some time making gifts for them. Overall, if you’re an experienced amigurumi maker looking for a collection of cute Pokémon projects all in one place but you don’t mind, doing a bit of troubleshooting here and there, Pokémon Crochet will be a great addition to your crochet library.
