Free Crochet Mushroom Pattern – The Fun Guys

This year, crochet mushroom patterns seem to be popping up everywhere! Kind of like, well, mushrooms! With fall being right around the corner, I felt inspired to create this free crochet mushroom pattern for The Fun Guys!

The pun was too hard to resist and, these guys realy are a lot of fun to make. This free crochet mushroom pattern is quick, easy and highly addictive. I made three in an evening and if other deadlines weren’t looming, I’d probably still be making them.

Whether you’re looking for a last minute crochet gift, something to crochet for a market or just looking for something cute and fun to make, this free crochet mushroom pattern for The Fun Guys is sure to fit the bill.

The Fun Guys are easy to make and accessible for beginner crocheters. The embroidery on the face is minimal and can be done by even those that don’t posess strong embroidery skills (like me!).

I’ve even included my tip for how to keep your little Fun Guys standing on their own so you can line them up on a table for a market, take great photos and kids can keep them on a shelf, without them constantly toppling over.

This free crochet mushroom pattern is also easy to customize. I have provided instructions for two differently-sized polka dots to be sewn onto the cap for a total of three dots, as you can see in my sample photos.

However, don’t feel limited to having to make just three. Add as many of the dots to your little crochet mushroom/crochet toadstool as you’d like to create a different look for each Fun Guy you make.

If you’re not a fan of sewing on pieces, you can also use a fabric adhesive to glue the dots on. I did that for one of my samples just to see how it would work and it worked out great.

My only caution about using an adhesive would be to test it on your yarn before applying it to your toy to ensure there won’t be an adverse reaction (i.e. melting, not sticking, etc.).

For this free crochet muchroom pattern, I used WeCrochet’s Brava Minis to design them. I love these little mini skeins of Brava Worsted yarn because they are great for amigurumi and colour work projects.

If you want to do a tapestry crochet project or anything that requires colourwork but don’t want the hassle of making your own little balls of yarn, these are just the ticket. I use them more for amigurumi because it allows me to have access to a wide range of colours without storing a ton of huge skeins.

To make one Fun Guy, you’ll need two Brava Minis – one in white and another in your colour choice for the mushroom cap. They look fabulous in every colour and before you know it, you may have a little army of Fun Guys.

Special Stitches/Techniques:

• Invisible Finish/Join: FO leaving a long tail. Thread the tail onto a tapestry needle.  Place the tapestry needle through the top of the 2^nd ST from front to back and pull through.  Place tip of needle into top of the last ST of the round, under the back loop of the stitch, and pull through to the back of the work.  Weave in the end. Finished Size:

• Approx. 4.5” tall.

Gauge:

• 4 sts x 5 rows = 1 inch

NOTES:

• This pattern is worked in continuous rounds (unless stated otherwise).  Do not join at the end of the row, unless indicated.  A stitch marker is used to keep track of the beginning of the round.
  
  
• Gauge is not vital to the project but it may affect the amount of yarn needed for the project. 
  
  
• For a cleaner SCDEC, do your SCDEC under the front loops only (FLO) of the stitch rather than under both loops.  This is often referred to as an invisible decrease.  Check out my invisible decrease tutorial.

Finishing Touches

Use embroidery thread to sew a small smile on the face, using picture as reference.

If your toy isn’t able to stand up on its own, follow these steps to create a small indent in the bottom of the toy which will help it stand up.

1. Thread a tapestry needle with a length of white yarn and tie a knot in the end. Insert the needle into the toy on the back and bring the needle out through the middle of the MC in the base.  Pull the knot inside the toy to hide it.
   
   
2. Insert the needle back into the toy, slightly off-center, and out through the back of the toy (making sure to pull it through a hole and not through the yarn), pulling to create an indent.  Tie a knot or two, close to the fabric.
   
   
3. Insert the needle back into the toy to pull the knot(s) inside the toy.  Weave in end and FO.
