I am so excited to share with you this week’s free crochet pattern for blog post for my Pawsitively Cozy Crochet Cat Bed! This easy pattern makes a round, simple diy crochet cat bed, using simple stitches and basic shaping techniques.

This modern cat bed can be used for cats or if you have a smaller dog, it could be used as a small dog bed. The best part is this crochet cat bed pattern has been designed to minimize sewing and only has one seam.

Are you ready to learn how to crochet a cat bed yet? Let’s talk about what materials we’ll need and some tips before we get started.

My family has a strong love of cats and my daugther has been begging me to make a cute crochet cat bed for her favorite kitty, our family cat. Our feline friend Bacon, fancies herself to be royalty so I knew that I had to make her kitty bed a cozy place that was more luxurious than a standard pet bed so I opted to use a fur yarn to give it a bit of luxury. Plus, it makes it so fluffy and cozy, it’s irresistable.

So I put my love of crochet to work to create a special place for Bacon. Bacon now loves her new comfortable place to sleep and sometimes she looks to happy in her cozy bed that I think I need to make one for me

The Pawsitively Crochet Cat Bed Pattern is crocheted using Fable Fur yarn from WeCrochet (crochet.com). I’ve opted to pair a large crochet hook with this yarn to make sure this project works up quickly and so it is super easy to feel your stitches as you work.

This is a relatively simple pattern however, if this is your first time working with fur yarn, then check out my Tip and Tricks for Working with Faux Fur Yarn post for my top tips and tricks to help you hit the ground running.

Can I Substitute Another Yarn to Crochet This DIY Cat Bed?

This easy crochet cat bed pattern uses a super bulky yarn and although fur yarn is a specialty yarn, you can absolutely subtitute another yarn for this pattern. You can use another smoothe super bulky yarn of your preference, t-shirt yarn or multiple strands of yarn held together to create this comfy cat bed for your furry friend. Use your favorite colors, expriment and have fun.

To ensure that your new bed is the expected size, checking your gauge is an absolute must. This pattern would work with bulky or super bulky yarn weights as long as you’re able to match gauge with them. However, if you use a jumbo yarn you could follow this pattern and create a bulky cat bed that is even larger than the dimensions given below.

If you don’t follow gauge or use a bigger yarn, just keep in mind that it will change the amount of yarn and foam needed.

This project also uses some high density foam to help give this simple crochet cat bed some structure and to create the outside walls. It doesn’t require a lot of it and I was able to get a piece for $12 at our local foam/furniture recovering store.

High density foam is firmer than regular crafting foam and will give you more structure and stronger walls for your crochet cat bed. The price difference between the craft foam and the high density foam was only a couple of dollars here and it made a HUGE difference and is definitely worth the splurge for the results I had in my finished product.

The Pawsitively Cozy Crochet Cat Bed Pattern creates a pet bed that measures approximately 20″ across, 8.5″ tall and 61.5″ around. It’s a decently sized bed and should fit most cats or even smaller dogs like chihuahuas or shih tzus.

Skill Level:

Terminology:

  • U.S. Terminology

Supplies:

Abbreviations:

  • CH = Chain

  • FO = Finish Off

  • MC = Magic Circle

  • SC = Single Crochet

  • SCDEC = Single Crochet Decrease / Single Crochet Two Stitches Together

  • SCINC = Single Crochet Increase / 2 Single Crochet Stitches in the Same Stitch

  • SL ST = Slip Stitch

  • ST = Stitch

  • WS = Wrong Side

Finished Size:

  • Approximately 8.5” tall x 20” wide across x 61.5” around

Gauge:

  • Rounds 1 – 4 = 4” across

Notes:

  • Gauge is not vital to the project, but it may affect the amount of yarn and foam needed for the project.

  • Adhesives: I used a hot glue gun and hot glue to glue the ends of my foam together, however I recommend testing any adhesive that you use on a part of the foam first to ensure it doesn’t melt or damage your foam.

  • A 10mm crochet hook is recommended for the project but if you find you are unable to feel your stitches, you can adjust your hook until you can more easily feel your stitches to more easily know where to place your stitches.  This may however affect your gauge and therefore, the amount of yarn and foam needed.

  • This pattern is worked in continuous rounds (unless stated otherwise).  Do not join at the end of the row, unless indicated.  A stitch marker is used to keep track of the beginning of the round.

  • All pieces made in the Fable Fur are worked and sewn onto the project with the wrong side facing out to show the better-looking side of the fur.

Rounds 19 – 48 should measure approximately 14” tall at this point.  Place project on a flat surface and insert the foam around the base and fold the fabric over the foam. If you flip your piece over, the cushion top should line up with the edge of the foam so that a small indent around the cushion is formed.  If ends of foam overlaps, trim the end until pieces touch and it fits snuggly. Optional: Secure the ends of the foam together with glue/adhesive (see notes).

  4. Hello.
Is there a way to make the cat bed bigger or maybe in a rectangular shape?
My cats are rather large (Maine Coon cats), so this size would probably be a little small for them.
    Thanks.

    • Hi Shari,
I couldn’t make it a different shape without creating an entirely new design and I currently only have it available in one size. If it helps, in terms of sizing, I looked after an 8 month old, 65lb doberman this week for a friend and this was his favourite bed in the house.
