Monstera Leaf Crochet Mug Rug Pattern

Someone I know recently said “mug rugs are my favourite thing to happen to coasters” and I totally agree! Crochet mug rugs are so much fun to make. They’re quick, easy and you can do all kinds of fun things with them. Monstera leaves are incredibly popular right now so I thought, why not mix two great things together? And that’s how my Monstear Leaf Crochet Mug Rug Pattern was born. This free mug rug pattern is accessible for beginners and even better: there are no ends to weave in! Before we get into the mug rug pattern, let’s talk about the technique that I used for this and why it’s so much fun. So I used a tapestry crochet technique where you do not turn your work. You will be working your project with the right side always facing you. You’ll carry the unused yarn as you work each row and finish off both colours at the end of each row, reattaching your yarn in the first stitch for every new row.

To create the tassels, you’ll leave a tail of a few inches on both sides of the project and trim them up at the end. Using only two colours makes this easy to do the colourwork needed to create our monstera leaf image and keeping those ends on each side, eliminates the need to weave in ends. If you don’t want the tassels, you can weave in your ends if you choose but I think it adds to the rug feel of my little crochet mug rug.

Gauge isn’t super vital to this project but just keep in mind that not matching gauge will affect the size of your crochet mug rug and the amount of yarn utilized. Yarn yardage given for this project is approximate and based on the gauge given. For this project, I used my favourite multi-purpose cotton yarn: WeCrochet Dishie. Dishie is such a fabulous 100% cotton yarn and I love it so much, I bought it in every colour they sell. They make it easy to do that though because WeCrochet has a value pack where you can buy Dishie in every colour and it saves you a bit of money. Check out the value pack at crochet.com. This yarn is fabulous for washclothes, crochet mug rugs, colourwork projects, bags and more. Seriously, I replaced all the other multi-purpose cotton I had in my stash with this stuff and I don’t regret it.

This crochet mug rug pattern uses a colourwork chart to illustrate the monstera leaf image. This chart is to be read from right to left for right-handed crocheters and left to right for my left-handed friends. • 27 yds/25 m (0.46 oz/14g) of WeCrochet Dishie in Swan
  
  
• 25 yds/23 m (0.5 oz/13g) of WeCrochet Dishie in Kenai
  
  
• Scissors

Abbreviations:

• BLO = Back Loop Only
  
  
• CH = Chain
  
  
• ST = Stitch
  
  
• SL ST = Slip Stitch
  
  
• SC = Single Crochet
  
  
• FO = Finish Off

Finished size:

• 5.25” tall by 5.75” wide not including fringe

Gauge:

• 22 sts x 17 rows = 4 inches
  

NOTES:

• Gauge is not vital to the pattern but it may affect the size of your project and the amount of yarn required
  
  
• Carry unused colours and crochet over them as you work.
  
  
• This entire project is worked in rows worked in the BLO (back loops only).  When reattaching your yarn at the start of a Row, attach your SLST under both loops of the first ST.
  
  
• Start Rows 2-22 by reattaching the main color yarn to the first ST of the previous Row and carrying the yarn inside your stitches.
  
  
• When starting each row, leave a tail a few inches long of both colours hanging on the edge of your work so you will have fringe on both sides.
  
  
• Each Row ends but fastening off both colours, leaving a tail of a few inches to create your fringe (you’ll trim it up at the end.
