It is Week 3 of our Amigurumi Advent Calender Crochet Along (CAL) and we are continuing to learn how to crochet an easy doll using my free crochet doll pattern for Advent Amy! The written pattern and a video tutorial for this part of the project and are available.
This week, we will be crocheting the arms for our doll, adding a nose and learning how to embroider eyelashes on our dolls. We will also be making our advent calendars so that we have a place to store all of our clothes and accessories that we will be making for our dolls over the coming weeks.

This week we are going to be learning how to embroider eyelashes on our amigurumi dolls, crocheting the arms for our dolls and how to add blush to our dolls. After we have completed our dolls, we’ll move on to learning how to create our DIY advent calendars.
How to Gift Your DIY Amigurumi Advent Calendar
When I was developing this idea, I gave a lot of thought to how we would gift this project to someone. I’ll share with you my plan and of course, you can gift it however you would like, but I hope that this will give you a good starting place.
On December 1st, present your intended receipient with you completed doll and the completed (and filled) DIY advent calendar. My plan is to gift the doll without any clothes on and have my daughter discover outfit pieces to use with her doll as she opens her advent calendar. Because I’m doing it this way, I plan to have an outfit piece in each of the first three boxes of the advent calendar.
Should you wish to present your doll already clothed, then you’ll have to make an extra outfits from the outfit patterns we’ll be working on in the coming weeks in order make sure you still have enough to fill the box.
I deliberately planned to have us create our advent calendars this week so that we have a place to store our outfit and accessory pieces as we complete them. As you complete the pieces, place them in your desired box number. I put mine in the box in the order that we are making them.

- 2 – 12 mm Safety Eyes in preferred colour (Mine are from Chateau Bornais Crochet)

- CH = Chain
- CH SP = Chain Space
- DC = Double Crochet
- FLO = Front Loops Only
- FO = Finish Off

Special Techniques and Stitches:
- Invisible Finish/Join: FO leaving a long tail. Thread the tail onto a tapestry needle. Place the tapestry needle through the top of the 2nd ST from front to back and pull through. Place tip of needle into top of the last ST of the round, under the back loop of the stitch, and pull through to the back of the work. Weave in the end. Learn how to do this with my invisible finish/join tutorial.
- Picot Single Crochet (PSC): Insert hook into indicated stitch, yarn over hook and pull through stitch. Yarn over and pull through one loop on the hook three times. Yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook. Learn how to do this with my Picot Single Crochet Tutorial.
Finished Size:
- Doll is approximately 10.5” tall
Gauge:
- Clothing: 4 sts across x 6 rows = 1” square
- Doll: Rounds 1 – 4 of the Leg = 1.5” across at widest point.
Notes:
- Gauge is important for ensuring that all of the parts of your doll fit appropriately. If you don’t plan to match gauge, ensure that you maintain a consistent tension throughout your project.
- This pattern is worked in continuous rounds (unless stated otherwise). Do not join at the end of the row, unless indicated. A stitch marker is used to keep track of the beginning of the round.
- For a cleaner SCDEC, do your SCDEC under the front loops only of each st rather than under both loops. This is often referred to as an invisible decrease. Learn how to do this invisible decrease tutorial.
- In Round 1 of the Body of the doll only, the CH 1 is counted as a st and should be worked into in Round 2 of the body.

Easy Crochet Doll Tutorial Week 3: Step-by-Step Video Instructions.
Arms (Make Two)
Round 1: Using Colour A, make a MC and SC 6 into the MC. (6)
Round 2: (SCINC) x 6 (12)
Rounds 3 – 20: SC around (12) – Add stuffing to the arms as you go.
FO leaving a long tail. Whip stitch the opening of the arm closed and sew onto the body of the doll, 1 round below the narrowest part of the neck.
Nose
Take a length of Colour A and embroider a nose in Round 30 across 4 stitches. Sew over the stitches multiple times until the nose sticks out from the face slightly. FO and weave in end.
Adding Eyelashes
- Using the black embroidery thread held double, insert needle through back or side of head and out through the stitch directly next to the inside-center of each eye.
2. Bring embroidery thread along the top of the safety eye and insert the needle into the stitch directly next to the outside-center of the eye.
3. Bring needle out of the stitch directly to the right of the stitch you just came out of (Left for the left eye) and insert back in through the previous stitch.
4. Bring needle out of the stitch that is one stitch above and slightly to the right (for the first eyelash on the right side and to the left for the left eyelash).
5. Repeat with the other eye. FO.
Cheeks (Optional)
If you’d like to give your doll rosy cheeks, use blush in your preferred shade and a make-up brush to apply blush to the face. (see a demo on the video tutorial)
How to Create a DIY Advent Calendar for Amigurumi
Now that our dolls are completed, we are going to work on creating out diy advent calendar. You’ll need 24 boxes that measure at least 2.7” square to create the advent calendar(I got these advent calendar boxes on Amazon) a hot glue gun, hot glue gun sticks and any additional items to decorate your advent calendar you may wish to use.

Decide on a configuration for how you would like to place your boxes. I placed mine in stacked on top of eachother, with the boxes opening outward because I felt it was the sturdiest way to put them together. I did 4 rows of 5 boxes and 1 row at the top of 4 boxes.
Once you have your configuration decided, use your hot glue gun to glue the boxes together. Once done, use the stickers provided in the box kit (or us number stickers, a marker, etc) to mark the numbers 1 – 24 on the boxes. They don’t have to be in any particular order, just as long as all the boxes have their own unique number from 1 – 24.
At this point, you are done your advent calendar but should you choose, you can decorate the box further to make it more fun for the child you intend to give it to. Some fun additions to the boxes are ribbon, stickers, glitter, puffy paint and more. Your imagination is the limit!
