Free Design Your Own Crochet Blanket Calculator

Want to design your own crochet blanket but don’t know where to start? I’ve created a calculator that enables you to do just that. You can use any yarn and any stitch, you just need a swatch completed using your desired yarn and stitch to get started.

This calculator will tell you exactly how many stitches and rows you need to create a blanket in your desired size ( 14 sizes to choose from – stroller through king) as well as how much yarn you’ll need to complete it.

How to Use the Design Your Own Blanket Calculator

Make your gauge swatch in the stitch you want to make your blanket in. Making it at least at least 6″ x 6″ (15.24 cm x 15.24 cm) or larger is ideal. Once the swatch is ready, you can follow the steps below to use the calculator.

1. Enter Your Swatch Details

Fill in the information based on your finished swatch (the one you crocheted to test your stitch, yarn, and hook combo). You’ll need:

  • Swatch Weight – How much your swatch weighs. Don’t forget to choose the right unit (grams or ounces).

  • Swatch Width & Height – Measure your swatch and choose whether you’re using inches or centimeters.

  • Stitches per Row – Count the number of stitches in one row. If your turning chain counts as a stitch, be sure to include that in your count.

  • Rows in the Swatch – Count how many rows you crocheted and input it in this field.

2. Add Your Yarn Info

Next, pop in the details from your yarn label:

  • Skein Weight – The weight of one full skein (in grams or ounces) of the yarn you used for your swatch and intend to use for your blanket.

  • Skein Length – How many yards or meters are in one skein of your selected yarn. (if you’re unsure where to find this information, check out my How to Read a Yarn Label tutorial or check the yarn manufacturer’s website)

3. 🛏️ Choose Your Blanket Size

Select the blanket size you’d like to make from the drop-down menu. There’s everything from baby blankets to king-sized throws.

4. Hit “Calculate”

Once everything is filled in, click the Calculate button and hang tight for just a second. Then – ta-da! – you’ll get how many stitches and rows you need to create a blanket that size as well as how much yarn you’ll need.

Things to Know Before Using This Calculator

  • You need to adjust the yarn amount: The yarn amount given is the EXACT amount of yarn you will need to complete your project. That does not include any yarn tails to weave in or account for any variations in gauge.

I suggest inflating the amount of yarn given by 10 – 20% (adding more) to ensure that you do not run out of yarn. This is enough to account for yarn ends and small variations that occur in gauge when working on a larger project. For example, if the calculator says it will take you 1000 yards to complete your project, you would buy 1200 yards, if you add 20%, (1000yds + 20% more) for your project.

  • It is for blankets using only one stitch and one color: This calculator provides data based on your gauge swatch information, which should be completed using one stitch, in one color.

  • You need to know how many chains to start with: This calculator will tell you how many stitches you need per row but you’ll need to know how many chains to create for your blanket based on your stitch you want to use.

  • Your stitch multiple may not work with the number you’re given so here’s what to do: If your stitch multiple doesn’t work you’ll need to pick a number that does work with your stitch multiple that is close to what you’re given by the calculator. This is what designers do. Not every size will be exact and you just get your blanket as close as you can to the desired size.

  • It works only for blankets worked in rows from one short-end to the other: Meaning that blankets worked from the center-out, on the diagonal and side-to-side won’t work.

  • It doesn’t include borders: If you want to add a border to your blanket, the yardage required won’t be added to the calculator’s output.

If the Calculator Isn’t Working…

Don’t panic—there’s a good chance it’s something simple. This calculator needs every field to be filled out in order to work properly. Here’s what to do if it’s not giving you a result:

  • Double-check that all input fields have a number entered.

  • Make sure you’ve selected a unit of measurement from every drop-down menu.

  • Confirm that you’ve picked a blanket size.

  • Any missing info will prevent the calculator from running, and it’ll highlight the fields that need fixing.

Still stuck? Try refreshing the page. Then, carefully re-enter your numbers and give it another go.
