How Many Chains for Granny Stitch Blanket?
The number of chains needed for your granny stripe stitch blanket depends on how big you’d like your blanket to be. At the bottom of this page you’ll find a chart that includes the sizes for 14 different common blanket sizes and how many chains that you’ll need to make a blanket of that size. Those numbers are given using the gauge given in this pattern so if you don’t want to match gauge, you must create a blanket to your intended size using the stitch multiple of 3+2.
How Many Color Changes Are Done In This Project?
What makes this a really easy and fun crochet project is that there are no color changes in this project. The stripe pattern that you see are created using a self-striping yarn (a ball of yarn that has multiple yarn colors that change at certain lengths). If you’d prefer to control your color changes, add your own stripes or try out different color combinations, you can change colors using the standard technique whenever you want to introduce different colors. Don’t know how to change colors? Check out my step-by-step tutorial to learn how to change yarn colors in crochet here.
What Yarn Do I Need for This Project?
I used a medium weight (4) yarn for this modern granny blanket that has a ombre color pattern repeat called Caron Jumbo Ombre (find it HERE at Yarnspirations). I used the color sepia for my blanket because the colors give it a bit of a modern feel to me and I like the way the colors transition. You can substitue any worsted weight (4) yarn for this project that you prefer or you can use any other yarn that you have on hand if you use the resizing notes given in the Notes section of the pattern.

How Many Balls Of Yarn Do I Need to Make a Granny Stitch Crochet Blanket?
To make the Medium Throw Size (the one in the sample I’ve made), you need 2 balls of Caron Jumbo Omrbre yarn or 1092 yds. In the size chart at the bottom of this page, there is a column that indicates how many balls of yarn you should need to make the various blanket sizes. Keep in mind that those amounts are based off of the gauge given in the pattern so if you’re using a different yarn or not matching gauge, that number will vary.

NOTES:
- Gauge is not vital to the project but not matching gauge may affect the amount of yarn needed and the size of your blanket. Taking time to match gauge will ensure that your project turns out to be the right size.
- This pattern is worked back and forth in turned rows.
- CH 3’s at the beginning of rows count as the first stitch of that row.
- Placing a stitch marker in the third chain of your CH 3 turning chains can help make finding them easier when you need to work into them in the next row.
- Numbers contained in the parentheses () at the end of each row indicate the stitch count and how many DC Clusters and DC stitches you should have at the end of the row.
- To adjust the size of this blanket to make it any size and to use any yarn, create a starting chain in multiples of 3 + 2. (For example, chain 42 + 2 = 44 chains)
- In the below chart, I’ve included the number of chains you need for your foundation chain, stitches and rows needed to create 13 other sizes for this blanket (14 total). The sizes below, include a 1 row single crochet border as given in the instructions. The written pattern below is for the Medium Throw size. To make it in another size, find the number of chains needed for your size and follow the instructions for Rows 1 – 4 for the Medium Throw Size instructions. Then repeat Rows 3 and 4 for the number of rows indicated in the chart for your size, finishing off with a Row of single crochet, as instructed in Row 75 of the Medium Throw instructions. You can then continue on to add your border, if desired.
- Yardage amounts, stitch and chain counts in the chart at the end of this post are approximate and based on the gauge given in the pattern.
- For the # of Rows column in the chart below, I have broken down the number of rows into the first row of single crochet stitches, how many rows of granny stripe stitch to work (abbreviated with GS) and the finishing single crochet row. These number do not include borders.

Border:
If you’d like to add a border to the sides of the blanket: you can single crochet around the outside of your blanket, working 1 SC in each ST, 3 SC stitches into each corner stitch (see image below) and 2 SC STs over each turning chain or DC ST along the side edges. I recommend placing a stitch marker in the first stitch that you create for your border so that you know where to stop. In my sample, I did 1 round of SC stitches around the blanket.

To create a wider border on your granny stitch crochet blanket, continue to SC around in the manner described above until your border is your desired width.
FO once you’ve reached the desired border size either by joining your last stitch to the next stitch with a slip stitch or using the invisible finish (see Special Stitches and Techniques) and weave in ends.
