Do I Have to Use a Button For the Center of Flower?

No! If you don’t have access to a button, you can follow my notes at the bottom of the pattern to substitute black yarn to create the center of your poppy.

How Do I Make This Crochet Poppy Pattern Bigger?

To easily make this flower bigger, use a larger hook size and a thicker yarn.  To make it smaller, use a smaller hook size and a thinner yarn.

  • Invisible Finish/Join: FO leaving a long tail.  Finished Size:

  • Approx 1.75” wide/tall when measured across the widest sections

Gauge:

  • Not vital to the project.  Motif is 1.75” wide/tall.

NOTES:

  • Gauge is not vital to the project however, not matching gauge may affect the finished size of your poppy and the amount of yarn you use.

  • This pattern is worked in continuous rounds (unless stated otherwise).  Do not join at the end of the Round, unless indicated.  A stitch marker is used to keep track of the beginning of the round.

  • The right side of the fabric is facing you the entire time you’re working on it.  Do not turn at the end of the round.

  • Reading the Pattern: Instructions in brackets: I.e.: (SC, SCINC) x 6, this means you’ll work 1 SC stitch in the first stitch and then SCINC in the next and you’ll repeat that pattern a total of 6 times.

    • Numbers indicated in () at the end of a Round/Row indicate the number of stitches you should have at the end of the Round/Row. I recommend counting your stitches at the end of each Round/Row before moving on to the next.

      • Where SC followed by a number (i.e. SC 14), you’ll work 1 SC stitch in the next 14 stitches or chains, unless the pattern specifies to work those stitches into the same stitch or chain.

      • Where multiple stitches are written in brackets without a number, i.e. (SC, HDC, TR) in the next stitch, it means you’re working all three stitches into the same stitch.

  • Magic Circle Substitution: If you struggle with the MC or your yarn breaks when you try to do a MC with it, use a CH 2 and work all Round 1 stitches into the 2nd chain from the hook.

If you’re attaching a safety pin to turn this into a poppy brooch, use the yarn tail to sew the stationary part of the safety pin to the back of the poppy.  Weave in ends.

How to Use Black Yarn Instead of a Button:  To use black yarn as the centre of the flower instead of a button, simply work Rounds 1 and 2 in black. Fasten off using the invisible join. Then, attach red yarn to the first stitch of Round 2 with a slip stitch over the join (this is the first stitch of Round 3) and continue with Round 3 in red.
